This book inspired me to become a better writer, not because it is an "instruction manual," but because the passion with which the mechanics of writing are discussed is palpable. I was assigned to read this book in a medical science writing course, and have applied the lessons I've learned to science writing ever since. It is useful for all types of prose--technical, persuasive, expository, or other. I had no idea how excited I could be about punctuation until reading this book. My writing has improved enormously since reading "Writing with Style" because I became very aware of the effect that small changes in syntax and structure can have on written communication. Any time that I feel a lack of inspiration or have writer's block, I pick this book up again because it always reignites my passion for the written word. A must for all writers of all fields. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This is the best guide for beginner writers on the market. Why? It's fun to read and it is short. I misplaced my copy from s college course (lent it to the wrong person) and my husband purchased a copy for me for our anniversary several years later. I cried (because I was so happy). If that isn't a good sign, I don't know what is. Who needs jewelry when you know how to write with style!

I'm not fond of elitists, especially when they're wrong. John is neither.Opening to a random page delivers the expected quality: "Two years ago it never occurred to him [a hypothetical student] to size up his audience, for two years ago he wasn't writing expressly for his reader; he was writing simply for himself. Now, though, persuasion is vital to him, so it's become part of his standard procedure to second-guess his reader's needs, taste, and level of sophistication."The book is light, small, and easy to hold. It fits easily in a carry-on, or a side pocket, just in case you want some light reading on a trip. The title isn't embarrassing, either.

Originally bought this for my Writing 2 class but I ended up keeping it because I loved the ideas in it so much! Definitely helped me elevate my writing and put some concepts into easier to follow and more manageable steps, definitely take some things with a grain of salt when it comes to academic writing but other than that give some of the ideas a shot!

This book has been an amazing tool for me as a writer! The author writes in such a way that the sometimes dry topic of English mechanics is actually fun to read. I go back to 'Writing With Style' pretty often. Though, admittedly, I didn't refer to it before I wrote this review.

My daughter is a great writer. But she wanted to step up her game for her honors english class in college and this worked perfectly. Straight As so far.

A fun and flirty romance a little tame for me but a good read. If you like a light wholesome romance this is it.

I loved all of these stories that you wrote in this series. I could have kept going with each story as you moved on to the next set of characters. I could not tell you if I had a favorite or not.

All three of these books were really good. All of the women were funny and had a good sense of humor. The guys knew that they messed up and had to figure out how to keep the women they loved!

The language is terrible. I couldn't read it because of all the "4-letter" words which started almost immediately.

A great box set for a great price. Fun flirty with just enough angst to keep things interesting.

I loved the book it was cute and looking forward to reading more by this author

Enjoyed the set especially the third book. The twists and turns of Sophie’s and Rowen’s love story differentiate this from the first two books.

It provides all the information you would need on outfitting for Everglade paddles, including links to outfitters, checklists, etc. It then gives detailed descriptions and maps on all of the available campsites and landing. An invaluable tool if you are considering paddling the Everglades.

If you are planning on making this trip this book is a must have. It is packed full of useful information and good advice. A good planning guide.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is planning this great adventure.

Being somewhat familiar with the Wilderness Waterway, from having made one north to south transit, I expected to scan the references to places of special interest to me and leave the rest for use as needed. Instead I found myself drawn to read each entry until suddenly I had finished the book. And, having read the book, I realize how much more there is to experience along the Wilderness Waterway. Their reports stir the imagination.The course instructions will be invaluable as you paddle. Their route descriptions ingeniously couple specific guideposts for either a north or south approach on the same page. Things always look different from the other direction. Along with the ever present charts and GPS coordinates, their notes resolve the confusions you are likely to encounter and get you to your intended destination.The book is presented in sections, making for easy reference whether you seek information on route, camp site, park life, technical preparation, or even the assistance of related businesses. Had to buy this book as a text for a film class. As it was my FIRST film class, this was a very difficult and dense read. Give yourself time to work through it if you need to read it. In my opinion, it was not written for beginners to understand.

Okay. A bit over keel on the information. Good to at least read through for some information. Not as much as I expected for film studies.

Happy it came in the Kindle version but it isn't that entertaining. It really is just the basics of film studies.

This is not an easy book to read and her admonishments to adoptees go over the top IMHO and I wish she had left those out. It's difficult enough to read and understand the good, bad and ugly in relation to adoption and the inevitable self doubts an adoptee deals with on a conscious or subconscious level. My favorite part is several pages toward the back wherein she is speaking to clinicians regarding the pathology. Anyone who thinks adoption is going to be a happy ending is kidding themselves. This book is honest. Any adoptee who thinks they haven't been affected by their experience doesn't understand what was done to them. This book explains the tragedy very well.

This book is full of pertinent information about what happens when a child, especially an infant, is adopted. It explained things about my life I couldn't understand. The book is very readable. There are some technical terms, but they are well explained; the concepts are reinforced with self-questions and exercises to work through. I'm using it with a counselor and it has been very beneficial. Highly recommended.

Nancy has written an outstanding analysis of adult adoptee behavior. So much of it rang true and explained some very familiar behaviors in a clear, logical way. I thoroughly enjoyed her work and I highly recommend it to adult adoptees as a tool for self understanding!

Another amazing accomplishment for an author dedicated to the suffering of a taboo minority. I read the primal wound while in medical school and felt validated for the first time in my life that I was not abnormal, my situation was. With coming home to self, ms. Verrier attempts to bring tools of closure so that social isolation and despair do not make for a sad bookend In an unfulfilled life. She gives me hope that if it can be described, it can be treated. Her analogies to organic brain trauma are especially interesting. My life has been improved by reading her work and I would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with the inherent issues of being adopted. Bravo and thank you again!

Great Book for Adopted Adults. Its a long one packed with information. I could not believe all the habits and behaviors I have that I never knew were attributed to being adopted. I have only made it through half the book. I tend to pick it up here or there. I would definitely recommend.

"Coming Home to Self" should be required reading for adoptees, adoptive parents, and adoption professionals. This book is probably the next best thing to being in therapy with Nancy Verrier!

Wonderful book - hard cover, with so many pictures and drawings, it reminds me of a picture book I would have had as a child - wonderful to just hold and look through - and yet is has lots of reading material and is chock full of information.I especially like the structure of first telling you about bees in general (apparently there are many more bees in the world than honey bees, most of them solitary) with some very nifty information (with instructions and oodles of pictures) of how to invite wild pollinators to your yard and offer them homes and food and protection - a section of planting for bees - and then, the second half of the book, all about getting started with keeping honey bees.No lack of information, though, seems to me like everything is covered, from getting bees to all the chores one needs to think about, even a time table for a bee keeper on what time of year one needs to look out for queens, swarming, diseases and pests, and winterizing, and how it is all done.Delightful little book that told me all I wanted to know and so much more, in a fun and entertaining format! Thank you!

Grandson loved this! I first saw this book during an inter generational activity with nursing home elders and the facilitys day care children, including my grandson. . The elders and children were soInvolved. . And many of the elders recognized planes from their military careers.

A very nice plane book. My 3 year old loves it. It explains a lot of plane features, so we learn more each time.

My 2-1/2 year old son loves to "read" this book, and I enjoy reading it to him.The text is definitely written to an older child (I would say that a child would have to be in at least second grade before reading it on his or her own). Fortunately, there are enough snippets of information that an adult can tailor the words to fit the child as she or he reads aloud.The photos, though, are what make this book so attractive. Each type of aircraft (to include experimental aircraft, Chinook helicopters, and future space-shuttle-like craft)has a two-page spread of photos in this oversized book. Most types feature at least three photos: one from the side, one from directly in front (the SR-71 Blackbird and the jumbo jet are particularly striking!) and one from the rear. Every type of aircraft has a photo taken while flying.My young son is learning that jet planes don't have propellers and that rocket engines look different from jet engines. Of course, at first, he was more interested in the striking colors of the aircraft chosen for the photos, but this book allows him to grow. He has a while yet before he learns "it all", unlike some of the other airplane books for young children.An enthusiastic thumbs up!
