Some recipes don't have quantities, which can be annoying. The pictures and options are great. Excellent book for a dinner party.

This book is just great! Like her first book, Ski Town Soups, Après Ski showcases recipes from ski areas across the country, and ranks them from easiest (green slopes) to more difficult (black diamonds) using ski symbols. It is such a clever concept, and cooks of any skill level can use this book! And the photography is fabulous enough for it to be a coffee table book.

after loving the first ski town cook book, I was anxious to get this one. It has not disappointed. The recipes are unique and delicious . Great fun to take something new and fun to a gathering. So good!

Absolutely loved the entire book. Fabulous recipes, great variety and beautiful photography.This will be a wonderful unique gift for many friends.

I bought this book in Breckenridge, Colorado at the Spice Merchant. It is fantastic and 100% ski culture cooking. The recipes come from restaurants that are located on various ski resorts. The recipes are signature "appetizer" and "side dishes" of those restaurants; including a few cocktail recipes here and there. Great pictures and the recipes are easy to follow. I recommend making the mac and cheese with hatches chilies. It is a little work but well worth it...don't chinch on the cheeses, trust me! Highly recommend.

All I can say is that the world is a very strange place when a book this bad gets so many good reviews. Forget Trump being elected or the UK voting for Brexit. This is truly bizarre.Normally I like to give some detail but it's hard to find anything to say about such a shallow piece of rubbish. The story was boring and predictable. The characters were one-dimensional. The sex scenes were about as sexy as listening to the long range weather forecast. I simply cannot think of one good thing to say about this book and can only assume that there is some sort of joke going on with the good reviews.

Oh.My.Fu****g book hangover! *stomping my foot like a 4 year old* I don't know how I'll survive until the next book.The author delivered a kick butt story as usual. The book just sucked you in and wouldn't let go. I read it in one gulp.I highly recommend this book.

4-4.5 Stars for Book 1 in The Alpha Brothers series by G Bailey! The only reason I didn't give it a 5 stars is because some scenes felt a little rushed/lacked detailed which would have elevated it to my top rating. Besides that, one of my favs of G Bailey's.In this new series, we get to meet Elodie and she is the scum of her pack because she has no claim and cannot shift. She is kidnapped from her pack and given this new life in the pack of the Alpha Brothers. I love how different each of the brothers are and have a soft spot for the younger ones (nothing wrong with Alpha, but he makes a stupid decision I know he will regret for awhile). I loved seeing Elodie get to experience different things she never had a chance to do. Loved the side scenes, like with the dead horses (they are alive but dead, don't think I am weird please!), the library, the necklace/charm, etc. I liked the twists in this book and am excited to see where G Bailey goes with the story in Book 2 in January (which cant come soon enough!!). I am intrigued by the new characters introduced at the end with the other pack and wonder how they will play with the Alpha Brothers.I will say that there were some dark moments in it, which I like seeing G Bailey go outside of her comfort zone, but I think it could have been pushed more if some of those scenes added some more detail or feelings from the characters. I hope we get more POVs in Book 2, loved getting to see the Alpha Brothers interact with each other in their minds.Definitely recommend this series, already preordered Book 2! I need to know what happens next, especially with River, Elodie, and the Alpha Brothers ❤️❤️❤️

Paranormal. Rh. 3 Alpha Shifters. Slave heroine. When Elodie's pack is talen over by the 3 Alpha Brothers, she is taken with them to be theirs to shared and used. Fast paced. Hot steamy scenes. Very Intresting story line. I feel like this could even be a standalone and it be a good ending. Recommended read.

I love G. Bailey and if you love her books and are not already stalker her then type in her name and start following.This book is another "give me more" at the end. I love how the story unfolds right in front of you as you keep turning those pages. Elodie starts off as a submissive individual with no confidence or care of herself, and when 3 alpha's who were believed to be the end of her turn out to just unleash her inner goddess tumble in her life, I couldn't put this book down. I am not going to ruin this book by telling you anymore but this is a must read! Follow G. Bailey on FB and be the first to know on all her upcoming books.

This book was amazing!! It may even be my favorite from G. Bailey! This is a much darker read out of all of G. Bailey’s books that I have read.I loved El as a female lead. Her acceptance of her life as a slave and potential death broke my heart but brought admiration from me as well. She’s an emotionally strong woman who deals with whatever crappy situation life throws her way. The Alpha Brothers are HOTT but I definitely wanted to castrate Alpha towards the end. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment of this series!!! Amazing work G!!!

About the Author

Michael T. Madigan received his B.S. in Biology and Education from Wisconsin State University–Stevens Point (1971) and his M.S. (1974) and Ph.D. (1976) in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His graduate research was on the hot spring bacterium Chloroflexus in the laboratory of Thomas Brock. Following a three-year postdoctoral at Indiana University, Mike moved to Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, where he taught introductory microbiology and bacterial diversity as a professor of microbiology for 33 years. In 1988 Mike was selected as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and in 1993, the Outstanding Researcher. In 2001 he received the SIUC Outstanding Scholar Award. In 2003 he received the Carski Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching from the American Society for Microbiology, and he is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Mike’s research is focused on bacteria that inhabit extreme environments, and for the past 15 years he has studied Antarctic microbiology. In addition to research papers, he has edited a major treatise on phototrophic bacteria and served for 10 years as chief editor of the journal Archives of Microbiology. He currently serves on the editorial board of the journals Environmental Microbiology and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Mike’s nonscientific interests include forestry, reading, and caring for his dogs and horses. He lives on a quiet lake with his wife, Nancy, four shelter dogs (Gaino, Pepto, Peanut, and Merry), and three horses (Eddie, Gwen, and Festus). John M. Martinko received his B.S. in Biology from The Cleveland State University. He then worked at Case Western Reserve University, conducting research on the serology and epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes. His doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo investigated antibody specificity and antibody idiotypes. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York on the structure of major histocompatibility complex proteins. Since 1981, he has been in the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he was Associate Professor and Chair, and Director of the Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry Graduate Program. His research interests centered on the structure- function relationships of immune system proteins, including immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, and major histocompatibility proteins. His teaching interests include an advanced course in immunology as well as immunology and inflammation instruction to medical students. For his educational efforts, he won the 2007 Southern Illinois University Outstanding Teaching Award. He has been active in a number of educational outreach programs for pre-university students and teachers. He has also been a faculty member at Bard College in their innovative Citizen Science program, an interactive laboratory, computer and problem-based-learning science curriculum that introduces freshmen students to critical thinking through the discovery and application of scientific principles. Bender received her B.S. in Biology from Southeast Missouri State University (1999) and her Ph.D. (2003) in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale.  Her dissertation work focused on the genetics of perchlorate-reducing bacteria. During her post-doctoral fellowship, Kelly worked on the genetic regulation of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the laboratory of Judy Wall at the University of Missouri–Columbia.  She also completed a transatlantic biotechnology fellowship at Uppsala University in Sweden researching regulatory small RNAs in bacteria.  In 2006, Kelly returned to her alma mater, Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. Her lab studies a range of topics including the regulation of stress responses by small RNAs, microbial community dynamics of sites impacted by acid mine drainage, and the bioremediation of uranium by metal- and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Kelly teaches courses in microbial genetics and molecular biology, has served on numerous federal grant review panels, and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology. Her other interests include biking, cooking, and spending time with family, friends, and her miniature schnauzer, Pepper. Daniel H. Buckley is an Associate Professor at Cornell University in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. He earned his B.S. in Microbiology (1994) at the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Microbiology (2000) at Michigan State University. His graduate research focused on the ecology of soil microbial communities and was conducted in the laboratory of Thomas M. Schmidt in affiliation with the Center for Microbial Ecology. Dan's postdoctoral research examined linkages between microbial diversity and biogeochemistry in marine microbial mats and stromatolites and was conducted in the laboratory of Pieter T. Visscher at the University of Connecticut. Dan joined the Cornell faculty in 2003. His research program investigates the ecology and evolution of microbial communities in soils with a focus on the causes and consequences of microbial diversity. He has taught both introductory and advanced courses in microbiology, microbial diversity, and microbial genomics. Stahl received his B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Washington, Seattle, and completed graduate studies in microbial phylogeny and evolution with Carl Woese in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.  Subsequent work as a postdoctoral fellow and research associate with Norman Pace, then at the National Jewish Hospital in Colorado, involved early applications of 16S rRNA-based sequence analysis to the study of natural microbial communities. In 1984 Dave joined the faculty at the University of Illinois with appointments in Veterinary Medicine, Microbiology, and Civil Engineering.  In 1994 he moved to the Department of Civil Engineering at Northwestern University, and in 2000 returned to the University of Washington as professor in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Microbiology. Dave is known for his work in microbial evolution, ecology, and systematics, and received the 1999 Bergey Award and the 2006 ASM Procter & Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology.  He is a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.  His main research interests surround the biogeochemistry of nitrogen and sulfur and the microbial communities that sustain the associated nutrient cycles.  His laboratory was first to culture ammonia-oxidizing Archaea, a group believed to be the key mediators of this process in the nitrogen cycle. The first thing I like about the text is that it has a lot of chapters devoted to microbes before getting to the medical microbiology parts. I have one other microbiology text and it basically pays lip service to microbes across a few chapters and then spends the rest of the book talking about what diseases various microbes produce. There is nothing wrong with that if you are interested primarily in the medical aspects of microbiology, but what if you are interested in microbiology for the sake of microbiology itself? You get shortchanged. But this text has chapter after chapter covering microbes, in detail, before getting into the chapters devoted to medical implications.The second thing I like about the text is that I keep finding interesting tidbits of information: things you don't usually get from reading molecular cell biology texts and other biology texts. Things such as, the largest individuals of the bacterial species Thiomargarita namibiensis have a diameter of about 750 micrometers, making it about 5 times the size of a typical paramecium; Archaea do not have fatty acids in the membrane lipids; some Archaea have a monolayer instead of a phospholipid bilayer; many Archaeal lipids contain rings in the hydrocarbon chains; some prokaryotes have membrane-bounded (but monolayer) inclusions such as magnetosomes, PHAs, and sulfur granules; heterocystous cyanobacteria have a differentiated cell called a heterocyst where nitrogenase is protected from oxygen; some plasmids are linear; even though E. coli can double in population size in 20 minutes it take 40 minutes to replicate the chromosome; and so on.

Good amount of information / detail to understand. Also loved that this came in a hardcover since the book is quite hefty. Figures and pictures included in the book make understanding the material MUCH better. Would highly recommend. I am currently using this book for an Environmental Microbiology course and contains most of the information we need to know -- may need a better structure though.

So drugs are on mars. This can't hold a candle to the previous entry, the butcher of Anderson station. It's just a crime story set on mars. Could have been LA, NYC anywhere. The best part of it was Bobbie draper.

Robbie Draper,the Martian marine and temporary crew member of the Rocinante introduced in Caliban's War,the second full length entry in the Expanse series has mustered out after her narrow escape and is suffering from what used to be called combat fatigue. She's living with her brother and family in crowded conditions back on Mars. The aftermath of the fighting between Earth and Mars has left things unsettled and social unrest has made inroads in Mars as terrorist incidents stir the population. Her nephew has fallen in with some bad types and might just be in need of some serious assistance. Is Robbie up to the job? Solid read, good world building and well fleshed out characters especially Robbie whom I hope to see more of in the future. It doesn't hurt to have read the series up till now but it is not necessary as the Franck/Abraham writing duo that poses as James S. A. Corey is perfectly capable of writing an elegant stand alone short story. It may be marketed as a novella but trust me with an Amazon estimated read time of 1 hour and 9 minutes with 68 pages counting back end promo, its solidly in short story country.

A very nice addition to the Expanse series. It's not crucial to the main storyline in the novels, but it does add a lot to some of the characters and the world itself. It explores Mars and what life and society is like there, and also contributes extra information about Bobbie Draper - her family, her motivations, and of course some more opportunities to show how much of a bad ass she is. It's a short, fun, and exciting read - good all by itself, and a must for the hard-core fan.

I like this a lot more when it came to Roberta (Bobbie) Draper and her condition/situation in the aftermath of "Caliban's War". This gives another view of Mars, and what growing up there would be like.The main character, David Draper, Bobbie's nephew, is young and unformed. Not a very interesting young man, he seems even less connected to those around him than Amos does. Where in Amos it's part of his personality, to be laid back and takes shit as it comes yet has a simple appreciation for the little things, David feels like he's walking in his sleep. I didn't really care all that much for him, although his story brought more of Bobbie's story to light.

Seemed like kind of a useless short that didn't really reveal much about anythingI liked the writing and seeing a bit more in to Bobbies family but was underwhelmed. If it had been a chapter in the book I'd have been curious as to why it was written form David's point of view.Still the series is gripping and I'm glad to buy these and support the authors

A decent short story, but like the other Expanse novellas, lacking something. If you haven't read it yet, wait until this one comes out in a collection. Honestly, when I think to myself, "I wonder what happened to Bobbie Draper?" This is not what I was thinking. I like my version better.

Corey tells a nicely rounded story in 'Gods of Risk,' using the novella length to draw both strong characters, a well-developed conflict and just enough attention paid to the setting that the story feels grounded. It might lack some of the action, set pieces and stakes that it's bigger brothers are known for, but the novella makes up for it with thoughtful storytelling, an interesting plot and believable, if not always likeable, characters. It's easy to call 'Gods of Risk,' Degrassi Junior High-meets-Breaking Bad-meets-Total Recall, and maybe that is all it's meant to be, but there's a nice character drama here and the novella stands as well as a stand alone story as it does a larger piece of the overall Expanse series. Worth of a shot if you're a fan of Corey's novels, or curious about his universe.

Took a little over an hour, but it seemed like less. Fast paced and very engaging. Risk vs. reward is the game we all play, and sometimes get in over our head. The Gods of Risk have been kind to Bobbie Draper and those she cares about. Someone would describe a Marine saying "You could have no better friend, or no worse enemy." Bobbie fits that to a tee!

One thing these authors do really well is merge detailed character moments with a much large story that you know is always just around the corner.Gods of Risk is no exception. With a narrow focus touching barely on the larger narrative you get a feeling for what is happening on Mars in ways that the big strategic view of the prior books ignores.Oftentimes these Novella expansions are underwhelming and short and are basically unrealized novels. This is NOT the case with Gods of Risk. It stands alone nicely, touches on the larger universe and doesn't have the ghost of an unrealized full-length work attached.I'd love to see more of these small vignettes from different random characters in different places. Give us a Belter novella!!!Great expansion to the series and I can't wait for Cibola Burn!

This book is a true gem - one of Merton's more significant works, published during his eighth year at Gethsemani Abbey. It is significant in three ways: the first half of the book is perhaps one of the best dialogues to be found anywhere on why someone would want to be a monk; the second half is an exquisite, deep and loving overview of the Benedictines, the Cistercians (especially the Trappist Cistercians), the Carthusians, and the Camaldolese. The third area of significance is that it's easy to read into Merton's portrayals of the Carthusians and Camaldolese that he was already yearning for more solitude, already feeling unrest with cenebotic (monastic) life and starting his campaign to gain permission to become a hermit at Gethsemani. Being denied that, he sought to leave the Abbey and become a Carthusian, but was blocked there as well. "The Silent Life" gives us an early glimpse into Merton's thinking as he was discerning his spiritual direction. Strongly recommended.

Merton is among those writers who profoundly affirm Wallace Stevens' fixation on 'the determining presence of the personality of the artist', speaking of the component values of any literary work. Published in 1956, 'The Silent Life' discloses a still undistracted Merton, brilliant and pure like a god. His unseen life as priest and religious, and a personal and abiding inclination for an intense eremitic life (his ever seeking the hermitage was a desire never really requited for him), color the emotion of his discourse here. It burns like the prose of 'Sign of Jonas' and 'Waters of Siloe'. It's a later, wiser Merton opened and deepened that arrests and shows us ourselves, it really is; but reading this book you're made to wonder if Thomas Merton was ever again so ecstatically fastened to the Ideal of his fantastically converted heart. Such a language of love to serve the most clement scholarship! & best thing, it sings with all his determining love and confidence. Merton always expressed a particular affection for the pure hermits of Camaldoli, and the time he spends lovingly tracing their importance is one of the best parts of this book. Thomas Merton changed monasticism both by his devotion and his disaffection. This book's a good example of his already profound literary gifts, and an even better example of a man's purposeful race toward the God within.

I thought this was good introduction to what the contemplative life consists of i.e. discipline and commitment. In addition, Merton provides a historical summary of the contemplative orders of the Catholic Church. As one who considers himself a contemplative Christian, I found it to be a very satisfying read. I am a great fan of Merton's and found this book very enjoyable and enlightening.

One of Merton's earlier books regarding the monastic life. The descriptions of life as a Cistercian monk, its simplicity and deep spirituality soothe the reader with a balm of peace. Historical context is woven throughout, and provides an understanding of the methods used to this day to keep a religious community together both physically and spiritually. Merton came into controversy in his later actions and writings, but he was a very compelling writer and this was written in the earlier, and more joyful period of his Cistercian life. My favorite books by Merton are this, The sign of Jonas, and The Seven-Storey Mountain.

There is always a need to explain the monastic life on its own terms because the devotees of tomorrow come from society at large, which we all know, is largely materialistic in the western world and dismissive of the value of the contemplative religious life. We all have seen the advertisements that mock monastic life.The American monk Thomas Merton (1915- 1968) explains monastic life and the various Roman Catholic Orders in America. The monk withdraws from the world in order to travel directly to God. He writes, We must always remember that silence, solitude, recollection and prayer are the most important elements in the monastic life (p. 33). The first belief is that God is Life and therefore Man's deepest need is God. This explains the first Commandment Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul and with all thy strength. The Monastic Peace (page 1-57) is a general presentation on the goals and nature of monastic life using powerful Latin descriptions such as Puritas Cordin (Purity of heart) and In Veritate (In truth). Serious readers or enquirers must read this chapter several times because it goes to the heart of Benedictine Rule whether Cistercian or Camaldolese. The branches of the Benedictine Rule are covered in chapters The Cenobitic Life (page 59- 125) and The Hermit Life (page 127-171).The heart of monastic life is the same today as it was in 1957 when this book was written. In the concluding chapter Merton writes, Even though he may never leave his monastery, never speak a word to the rest of men, the monk is inextricably involved in the common suffering...he is appointed to fight these battles on a spiritual front, in mystery, by self-sacrifice and prayer (pp 172-173) To quote The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
