The Doughnut Fix, by Jessie Janowitz

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—For basketball-playing, cake-baking Tristan, the fact that his parents have bought a new house is an unmitigated disaster. The house is in rural Petersville, NY, and that means Tristan has to move from his apartment in New York City, where he knows the local deli menu by heart, to a town so small that it has no restaurants. To Tristan, who has baked almost all the recipes in White House pastry chef Roland Mesnier's cookbook, this seems unthinkable. Just as the boy is about to give up all hope in Petersville, he learns that the grumpy general store owner has a secret recipe for chocolate cream doughnuts which apparently are "life-changing." With the help of a new friend Josh, the town librarian's son, Tristan goes on an epic quest to find out the secret recipe and bring the famed doughnuts back to the sleepy town. As he navigates his way through negotiating prices with vendors and farmers, keeping the pastry gun out of his four-year-old sister's hands, and trying to cheer up his older sister, Tristan finds that setting up a doughnut stand is harder than it looks. Budding entrepreneurs who enjoyed Jacqueline Davies's "Lemonade War" series will enjoy this tale about a kid chef starting a business. Tristan is a refreshing protagonist who is comfortable in his own skin amidst his varied interests of basketball, cooking, and being a sympathetic, if occasionally frustrated, brother. His family members—a quirky, relentlessly optimistic father; restauranteur/caterer mother; a grumpy but brilliant older sister; and an effervescent handful of a younger sister—all help to create a warm and delicious start to a new series. VERDICT Tightly written and accessible. Hand to budding entrepreneurs and chefs; this is will be a nice entree in their menu of reading choices.—Evelyn Khoo Schwartz, Holton Arms School, Bethesda, MD

The Doughnut Fix, first book to a series from Jessie Janowitz, is a warm, funny and captivating story, told from the perspective of a young boy, uprooted from his comfortable, and full of excitement every day life in New York City, to a small hamlet upstate New York. For Tristan, the big city kid, and his two siblings Jeanine and Zoe, family’s move creates challenges beyond simple longing for familiarity of life left behind. There is a need, as well as necessity, for fitting in in new surroundings and for finding purpose in this strange, uncartain situation.Tristan takes us on a journey through his mind, as he attempts to chronicle his daily life filled with not only comical struggles, but also some pretty scary trials. His narrative voice is wonderful. He is serious at times, but also witty and hilarious, which makes for charming and captivating read. The book carries a great message for young readers, who might easily find themselves in situation similar to Tristan’s. There is always something good and interesting to be done. All you need to do is believe in yourself, never give up and keep trying. Great things will happen! While I definitely recommend this book to all young readers, I would also recommend it to parents. It’s a beautiful read for the whole family!

He's not "gifted and talented" like his sister, and now that Tris and his family have moved from exciting NYC to "the most boring town on earth," Tris doesn't feel like he fits in anywhere at all. Tris is endearing and relatable in his determination and all the ups and downs that come with it as he creates a business plan, finds some unlikely allies, and figures out where he shines (in the kitchen, of course!). A quick read that middle grade readers won't be able to put down. Smart and funny: even better than life-changing doughnuts.

I am a third grade teacher. I read this book personally to see if I would like it before sharing it. Great message.... good writing.... but be prepared to do some cooking and possibly start a side business when you are finished reading it!

Fantastic! My 9 yr old son went from the last page to the first to read it again straight away! We actually read it together and I enjoyed it just as much. The details really bring the story to life with lots of parent loving messages built in - sibling relationships, family values and rules, innovation and independence. Plus recipes in the back!!

I thought that the story line especially as told by the 12 year old's point of view was very entertaining. My grandson, who hated to read was captivated and anxious to read on!

From my 11 year old son: “The Doughnut Fix is a wonderfully written book with a great conclusion and exposition. It is a great book for 10-12 year olds who are wondering about business.”

Even if you don’t like doughnuts (which is tough for me to imagine), you will love Tris’s family and big heart.

The uncertainty of a twelve-year-old as he faces a whole new life thanks to a family move hits humor and an unexpected twist, which opens new doors in a way he never expected it could.Tristan figures something is up when his parents take him and his two sisters for a ride into the countryside, leaving New York behind, but he never expected to be introduced to their new, future home on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere. Not happy about any of it, he takes his bike to find at least something to eat for breakfast the first morning they are there. But the town is basically non-existence...definitely lacking on the breakfast end of things. When he sees a sign offering chocolate cream doughnuts, he thinks he's rescued. But that sign isn't all it seems, and soon he finds himself making a decision he would have never even considered in New York. The author lures in the sympathy during the first chapters as Tristan and his sisters are forced to leave everything they love behind...and that without any care for their opinion on the matter. Add Tristan's uncertainty about himself, since his one sister is 'gifted' and he struggles with multiplication, and he's a boy readers can easily identify with. Despite the negatives, Tristan is daring and holds just the right amount of rebellious attitude to make him a character to cheer for. He makes mistakes but sees them and corrects them. And he does become frustrated along the way. There are so many good things about this book, which make it a gem when it comes to food for thought. Tristan's self-doubt and how he tackles it is one lesson. His prejudice to the small town takes a real flip as he discovers how much richness the seemingly simple people there actually have...and some of the funniest quirks. There's a wonderful dash of working together and helping hands when most needed too.The most obvious theme of this tale is the building of his own business. The author masterfully weaves the basics of starting up a business and the troubles in entails into the story. Tristan faces hurdles he never expected, but ones which are very true to life. The solutions he finds are easy to understand and reflect reality. At the end of the book, there is a basic run-down of the most important parts of the process.Humor lines the entire tale like a constant, pink cloud. Not only is Tristan's youngest sister full of cute, silly moments, but the town's people hit with personalities as colorful as a rainbow. The pacing in the book does fall back every now and then, making it more a read for bookworms then reluctant readers. But it's still an enjoyable journey with Tristan, and the information he learns is sure to inspire young entrepreneurs and spark ideas of their own.I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it enough to leave my honest thoughts. I'm giving this one 4.5 stars and rounding up.

#24,235 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

There is no better children's book author than Robert McCloskey, and this is my favorite of this books. He is a champion artist. He understands children and weaves life with humor. The idyllic Maine island is the setting many of us long for, and this book at least brings it into our homes. Old fashioned life is glorified here, but not beyond what is realistic. The only critique of this book is the quality of the binding. Perhaps we have read it too many times, lol; but it is sadly falling apart! We have had two versions now, one softcover and one hard; both are falling apart. Aw well, it is well loved and bindings aren't now what they once were. But literature is alive and well.

This is another wonderful children's book by Robert McCloskey. If you like "Blueberries for Sal," I think you will enjoy "One morning in Maine," too. Sal is again the main character, and this time she has a loose tooth. There's a hidden lesson for children about learning how not to sweat the small things, but mostly, McCloskey captures those moments in a child's life where she creates her own narrative. Sometimes it's based on her imagination, and sometimes it's based on the world outside, but it's a story that brings back warm memories of one's own childhood.

I read this with great success to my 8, 6, 4 and 2 year old. This book is a long picture book but all of my four children enjoyed reading it together and that is pretty awesome. The story is simple and told from a child's perspective. Robert McCloskey makes his stories seem so real and yet magical at the same time.

I read these stories in my youth and took the up for my children as well, My seven and six year old son and daughter, love these stories. McCloskey was an award winning writer of many other fine children's books: Make way for Ducklings, Blueberries for Sal, Homer Price, Centerburg Tales and Time of Wonder. Check them out with your little ones. They are worth it. I was glad to still see these in print and available.

A beautiful edition of a classic story. It might have been written 60 years ago, but the simplicity of the sweet story rings true across the generations. Our little 3 yr old loves to read it over and over.

Lovely book. I bought it after stumbling onto McCloskey's Time of Wonder, and loved it so much that I starting scooping up all his books for my little ones. They love them! Innocent, dreamy, story of everyday adventures. My little ones are 3,3, and 5 - but I read well above their ages and they love these books & illustrations.

This story is absolutely fabulous. I got it even though my daughter has now grown up. I wanted to be sure to have it for the next generation. For kids (and some adults) the books of Robert McCloskey cannot be beat.

A great story for kids who are curious about the world. The writing and illustrations are ageless and as relevant now as when the great Mr. McCloskey first wrote the book.
