Analects, in case you were wondering, are "selected passages from the writings of an author.” I mention this definition here because it seems that the only time we use the term “analects” is when we consider the writings of Confucius. Was there once a larger corpus of writings from Confucius, and is what we have today distilled from some larger body of work? If so, then I wish we had that entire larger body of philosophical work, the same way we have a good many books from classical Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle; but that being said, I certainly am glad that we have the Analects as a distillation of Confucius’ philosophy. His Chinese name was K’ung Fu-tzu, 孔夫子, and the Latinate name that he bears today was probably bestowed by Jesuit missionaries to China in the 16th century. By any name, however, Confucius is a great philosopher who speaks to us today just as clearly as he spoke to the people of Chinese antiquity. He lived a long time ago – when he died in 479 B.C., the Spartan defense of Thermopylae had taken place just one year before – but it is astonishing how current and relevant his words and ideas remain.“Analects” is, of course, a Latin- and Greek-derived term; in Chinese, the book is è«–èªÅ¾,the "Lun Yü." It is divided into 20 books, and contains a total of 512 Confucian sayings, most of them quite short. On this re-reading of "The Analects," I encountered some sayings that were already familiar to me: e.g., “To say you know when you know, and to say you do not when you do not, that is knowledge” (II.17, p. 65). Yet on this reading, I learned many things that I found new.Perhaps because I’ve been reading a good deal of classical Greek philosophy lately, I found some striking parallels between Confucius and the Greeks who wrote sometime after him. For instance, when “The Master said, ‘Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without them’” (III.5, p. 67), it made me think of how the ancient Greeks considered any non-Greek-speaking society to be βάρβαροι, barbaroi, barbarians. I found myself thinking of the doomed tragic heroes of ancient Greek drama, men and women brought down by their tragic flaws, when I heard Confucius reflect that “In his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the man” (IV.7, p. 73).Confucius knows that his disciples aspire to government service in the bureaucracy of the Empire – hence the prevalence of sayings in which Columbus offers advice such as, “Do not worry because you have no official position. Worry about your qualifications. Do not worry because no one appreciates your abilities. Seek to be worthy of appreciation” (IV.14, p. 74),Additionally, in an acutely status-conscious society, Confucius’ listeners are very interested in what will help them achieve the distinction of “gentleman.” With considerable focus on the value of benevolence, Confucius suggests that “The gentleman understands what is moral. The small man understands what is profitable” (IV.16, p. 74). And in one of my favorite passages from the Analects, Confucius remarks that “the gentleman hates to dwell downstream for it is there that all that is sordid in the Empire finds its way” (XIX.20, p. 155).Readers who are interested in the Judeo-Christian philosophical and moral tradition may be struck by the ways in which Confucius disagrees with one of the primary moral imperatives of Christianity. In contrast with Lao Tzu, who in the "Tao Te Ching" tells his disciples to “do good to him who has done you an injury”, Confucius says, “What, then, do you repay a good turn with? You repay an injury with straightness, but you repay a good turn with a good turn” (XIV.34, p. 129). In other words, the only thing you owe to someone who has wronged you is straightness, directness, honesty. For Western readers, many of whom have been raised in the tradition of “whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39), this may be the most challenging passage in the entire "Analects."At the same time, Confucianism invokes the Golden Rule in a way similar to all the other great moral, philosophical, and religious systems of the world. In response to a disciple’s asking, “Is there a single word which can be a guide to conduct throughout one’s life?”, Confucius replies, “Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire” (XV.24, p. 135).Perhaps because it is the dawn of a presidential election year here in the United States of America, I found that I was particularly interested in one particular example of Confucius’ advice to his disciples: “Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is disliked by the multitude. Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is liked by the multitude” (XV.28, p. 136). Good advice in the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty, and good advice in any modern nation nowadays.I had this edition of "The Analects" with me when my wife and I were traveling in Beijing, home of the second largest Confucian temple in the world. Walking in the Forbidden City, my copy of "The Analects" in my jacket pocket, I wondered how many readers, imperial or otherwise, referred to their own copy of this book while traveling between and among the buildings of this most impressive city-within-a-city.This edition of "The Analects" includes a glossary of names and places mentioned in the book, an appendix on events in the life of Confucius, a textual history of the book, and a chronology of Confucius’ life. Particularly helpful is another appendix, one that describes the characters of the different disciples with whom Confucius speaks in the Analects. For readers of Confucius’ time, and indeed for followers of Confucianism nowadays, the differences in character among disciples like Tzu-kung, Tzu-lu, and Yen Yüan would be as self-evident as the differences in personality that Christians see among Saint Peter, Saint John, and Saint Thomas in the New Testament. This Penguin Books edition of Confucius’ "Analects" is a very fine way to acquaint, or reacquaint, oneself with one of the most important books ever written.

I own the Oxford World's Classics edition translated by Raymond Dawson. This was my first reading of 'The Analects' and while it was not quite what I expected, as it does not contain a truly coherent philosophy or even a consistent mode of presentation or authorship, it was nevertheless an incredibly rewarding study. And I say study rather than read because while it is quite brief (82 pages) there are a wealth of "chapters" that will leave you pondering--in a good way! If you are worried about the stereotype of vaguess and aloofness in Chinese sages, you needn't fear 'The Analects'. The main thing that can obscure some of the "chapters" is their reliance on Chinese history and most of these are briefly cleared up in Dawon's notes. 'The Analects' can be picked up and put down at a whim due to the informal structure and you will never feel that you lost the flow of it should a few days pass between readings. While I can't compare it to another translation or the Chinese, I found Dawson's translation to be very smooth and highly consistent throughout, and he supplements the introduction with helpful notes on his translation of key terms. This is an edition primarily for the newcomer rather than the scholar (not to say it is in anyway "dumbed down") as it is wonderfully concise in its introduction and notes, never saying more than needs to be said. However, in my case, I certainly wouldn't have minded more scholarship and context. Dawson uses Pinyin rather than Wade-Giles, which is a welcome shift in my eyes, as Wade-Giles often feels overwrought even if it sometimes comes closer to the true pronunciation, and there is a nifty conversion chart included in this edition. This edition like all of the newer Oxford World's Classics is neatly designed with a beautiful cover and good quality paper.

Confucius - The Analects is a rather intriguing book since it aims to tackle information regarding the well known Confucius in a cogent manner. The book is laid out in a fairly straight forward approach with no frills that's an extremely quick read.Within the introductory section, there is some background material featured, while a tad later on the book features notes on particular translations that the book offers. Knowing how complex translations can be, it's a well-thought out approach to delineate what the book means by each translated term, instead of assuming that the reader will know. Not only that, but also, certain words have various meanings, so to be able to narrow down with precision what was stated is greatly appreciated. For individuals seeking veritable gems of Confucius, this book has dozens of them.Reading this book will certainly help the individual realize how the culture was at the time, and why the information presented here was so vital to the upbringing and society in ancient China. The totality of the book is seamlessly interwoven to give you everything you need for comprehension, while not an iota more. This certainly helps since other books can be longwinded at times.Taking all into account the book definitely belongs in the libraries of individuals who value such knowledge with resounding depth. Confucius was definitely a master of his craft, and this book exemplifies that quite trenchantly.

Schools That Learn (Updated and Revised): A Fifth Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents, and Everyone Who Cares About Education

Review

“The idea that schools themselves can and must learn is the most important idea in education and this is the classic and indispensable guide to how that happens.”—David W. Orr, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College “Schools that Learn is a magnificent, grand book that pays equal attention to the small and the big picture - and what's more integrates them. There is no book on education change that comes close to Senge et al's sweeping and detailed treatment. Classroom, school, community, systems, citizenry---it's all there. The core message is stirring: what if we viewed schools as a means of shifting society for the better!-Michael Fullan, author of Change Leader and Learning Places"A rich, much-needed remedy for the standardized, assembly-line, industrial-age institutions that comprise too much of our school system today.  Chock full of useful tools, ideas, and exercises, this book is ideal for the many teachers and parents who are intent on resurrecting and fostering students' inherent drive to learn.  For educators working to reconnect learning with real life, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN is as essential resource." -Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of DRIVE and A WHOLE NEW MIND "This book is an absolute feast of riches; its many stories and case examples prove once again that 'the solutions we need are already here' - solutions created by the caring, generosity and brilliance of everyday people working in education."—Margaret J. Wheatley,  author of Leadership and the New Science and many other books.“This book is an essential chronicle of where our schools and communities are truly caring for our children. A much needed antidote to the assault on teachers and public education that dominates the news. A book of modern educational heroes and the thinking that is the foundation of their work.”-Peter Block. author of Community: The Art of Belonging"At a time when school reform has become synonymous with ill-conceived initiatives, it is refreshing to encounter a book that offers hopeful ideas, grounded in experience."-Diane Ravitch, Research Professor of Education at New York University and author of The Life and Death of The American School System  “Senge, author of the best-selling The Fifth Discipline, has written a highly readable companion book directly focused on education...Schools that Learn is a resource book, and as such includes numerous exercises, techniques, and stories designed to help the people who work with and within schools learn how to develop their capacity to find solutions to the problems that thwart improvement...Policymakers at all levels, school principals, teachers, parents, and students can benefit from the ideas, stories of inspiration, and many tools that are included. In Schools that Learn, Senge complexifies and scaffolds the conversation regarding what building capacity looks like in schools, and offers practical suggestions for how to begin to do it.” –Harvard Educational ReviewAcclaim for the original edition:"Today, more than ever, all the forces within society must join together to prepare our children to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world. Schools That Learn is an important resource for all those wanting to tackle the challenge of integrating family, school, faith community, and policymakers into one coalition on behalf of children."--Dr. James P. Comer, Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center, Associate Dean, Yale School of Medicine"I don't know of a country that is happy with its educational system. That is because most schools are crafted for the mass production ethic of industrial society. Changing this obsolete state of affairs is the best investment that a government or community can make. This book can help; it shows how schools can reorient themselves to emphasize humanity, adventure, entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and experimentation, instead of rote learning."--Kenichi Ohmae, author of The Mind of the Strategist and The Invisible Continent"I plan to read long passages to my daughter. Whenever I think about the world in which she (and her children) will grow up, the educational system seems to be the locus of both hope and despair. Reading this book is like opening the curtains and letting in rays of hope, illuminating an entire, systemic, detailed map for change."--Howard Rheingold, author, The Virtual CommunityWhat Educators and Students Say About How Our Schools Work:"It took us three years to define the standards we expected of students, because we engaged the community from the beginning. It mattered to us that [the people of Memphis] own the standards."--1999 U.S. Superintendent of the Year Gerry House"Ordinarily, teachers are taught to work as individuals, so staff development has to help them learn to work together. And it needs to be an ongoing process, with enough time to learn new ways of teaching, to develop esprit de corps, and to unlearn old habits."--Ed Joyner, executive director of the Yale School Development Program "We work harder than kids in other schools. But we have more fun doing it. All the kids have different rates of learning, so the teachers keep up different rates of training."--Students at a "five disciplines" -oriented middle school in Chelmsford, Massachusetts

SCHOOLS THAT LEARN is both a visionary and practical guide for how schools must evolve to meet the needs of students in the next 20 years. The use of multiple authors and perspectives mirrors some of the changes our schools must make to meet the needs of a new age. As Professional Development Director at a diverse Jesuit high school in San Francisco, I recommend this book to any educator, K-college. Senge's work will help prepare students for an era requiring a strong traditional academic foundation coupled with the need for creativity, and the social, emotional, and intellectual skills to work in high performing teams needed to rebuild our world.

Most of the 99% people in the whole world educate in a wrong way to their children. We know that the future of our Countries, our cities and our families is in the hands of our children. It is very likely that our society will continue deteriorate with the kind of education and concepts we are transferring to our future generations. System thinking is the only correct way of thinking, we do not live in a linear world, but in an intricate system of systems we urgently need to understand to survive. As Jay Forrester said: Until we reach a much better public understanding of social systems, attempts to develop corrective programs for social troubles will continue to be disappointing. Unfortunately Peter Senge stays short, because his recommendations should go to home school, which is ultimately the complete corrective mechanism to have better generations, jointly with system thinking. Our world urgently needs this kind of education, but I'm afraid that is too late to change the direction of the human race. At least, to those who understand, we can make substantial changes in our families and, chances are, that in our local communities as well.

Whether we experienced our student life as "sweat hogs" or not, each of us have tales to tell of being forced to learn in spite of the schools we attended instead of because of them. If we counted how many "good" schools or teachers we experienced over our lifetimes, we could probably count them on one hand (or finger!). For an institution that plays such a significant part in our development, this is a terrible performance record. With SCHOOLS THAT LEARN, Peter Senge (et al) legitimize the fieldbook format as an extremely effective teaching tool. Chocked full of examples, tools, theory, tips and traps to avoid, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN outlines an effective strategy for creating a powerful alliance between learners, schools, and communities. His is a call to action that must be heeded.Readers will be informed, challenged to get involved, inspired, troubled, and made to see how important an issue lifelong learning is. Rather than seeking to place blame, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN simply acknowledge the "opportunities" that are before each of us. Senge then uses this "gap" between the desired state of learning and the current state to motivate readers to take action. This is a book that should be on desk of every school administrator, teacher, parent and corporate training staff. The dialogue it will initiate has the potential to create, sustain and improve learning throughout all areas of our lives.Get it, read it, act on it, and SHARE IT WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW!

If you want a book that takes an honest, unbiased approach to the challenges facing public education. Then this is it.Senge has a well deserved reputation as a cutting edge theorist on how organizations need to operate in order to become, and remain, healthy. His application of these thories to educational organizations is both refreshing and enlightening. It was hard not to highlight something on every page. To those of us with long careers in public education, it is a clear articulation (and a validation) of lots of often vague feelings we have had regarding the direction of our organizations. Thanks Peter, et al for your insights!

Oftentimes when an author or group of authors collaborate on serving those of us who desperately want to improve organizations and to present material in a systemic way, "Schools that Learn" and Perter Senge, et al. have done it again.Thank you young people for offering your time, energy, and resources to bring us another and updated version of what is already a seminal resource in our industry.Thomas Mallory HillDoctoral Student at Argosy University on-line program

good

A good addition to Senge's Fifth Discipline library.

Best book ever for promoting cultures of learning in the school. Peter Senge is an excellent writer with creative ideas to helping students experience success. Every teacher should own this book!

I have had the joy of reading 3 of Stacy Stallings books over the last few months. I have found each to be creative, interesting, and engaging. I plan to make my way through most of her novels. There aren't as many talented authors in the Christian Fiction genre and I'm happy to see the author emerging as one of my favorites. I enjoyed this book thoroughly. This is a story of real people, with burdensome life experiences and what each chooses to make of their lives. I love reading a book with a main character who is such a strong person, loving, kind, and gracious. I also enjoyed seeing God transform the lives of the others in this book. That being said, I do want to say that I don't believe this book would be for everyone. If you aren't already a Christian, I think you would find the approach to faith to be heavy handed. I say this because some of the authors other novels are a bit softer in their approach and I think you would enjoy them and grow by reading them regardless of your faith. This book is a lot more outspoken in faith messages. It screams what it is to be a Christian. For me, I loved that about it. I am mentioning this because I think there are christian fiction novels that are written in such a way that you could hand them off to somoene else and they'd be a great tool for witnessing because it's not hitting you over the head with it. I don't think this is one of those books.Would I give this to a young adult? Probably but only with conversation. This book has some deep themes and the description of the "hero's" lifestyle before faith is such that I think it would require conversation.Overall, if you are into Christian Fiction...I say "Two Thumbs Up"

This is what a romance novel should be. While it is heavily laden with Christian prayers and a few sermons, it is written with such emotion. It took me on a rollercoaster ride of feelings and even made me cry. That is probably the highest praise I can give an author. Staci Stallings is absolutely amazing at what she does.Maggie is a doll. Even though she has absolutely nothing, and realizes she doesn’t fit into this world of money and power, she does her absolute best. All the while, she’s asking God for guidance and help.Keith is a walking contradiction. All he wants is to work with his father’s racehorses, but he also has to be the son of a billionaire. He puts aside what he wants more than anything in an attempt to make his father proud of him.I could go on for ages about how wonderful this book was and never do it justice. Staci Stallings has an amazing gift. Every person she introduces the reader to is brought to life. With a few words, the reader is transported to walks through tree-shaded lanes, horseback riding, to sitting beside a waterfall. The reader feels each emotion Maggie and Keith go through. When introduced to Dallas, Keith’s fiancé, the reader knows right away she’s had a privileged upbringing and fully expects it to continue without Staci Stallings saying anything about it. She has definitely perfected the axiom “Show, don’t tell.”As I mentioned above, there are a few sermons in the book. Maggie goes to church with her two young charges, and instead of glossing over the time, Staci Stallings uses that time to impart a few excellent messages. Each one reached out and grabbed me. I can’t help but believe the three sermons she includes in this book can be applied to anyone. For anyone who likes Christian romance, I’d fling this book at them in a heartbeat. As such, I’m looking forward to reading more books by Staci Stallings in the future. I’m positive they will be just as well-written and engaging as this book was.

I chose this rating for the author's use story to lead the readers through a look at 3 very difficult concepts for followers of Christ; forgiveness of the seemingly unforgiveable, how to know God's will, and what is our purpose here. All three are very difficult issues, but they were handled in a way that was consice and not sappy. If I could have given it more stars I would have. There were a couple of editing snaffoos, but nothing so serious that it took away from the story. Definitely an author I will be following.

This book had a few sermons in it, but they didn't bother me. One of them brought a teaching into my heart that previously was only head knowledge for me.I felt all kinds of emotions while reading this book, and it was hard to put down. I loved the twists and turns starting in the middle and to the end as well as the suspense in the first part of the book.I do wish the person of Keith's stepmom could have been in the book more than she was. What would also be interesting is if we got some background on "the help" so we could understand what was behind their actions or speech. This book would make a nice Book One of a series.I read a LOT of fiction, and I've certainly found authors who have needed proofreading more than this book does. However, I wish the author could have used the right spelling for one word that occurred at least twice: 'past' should have been 'passed'.I look forward to reading more of this author's books.

this book started out okay but I had a few issues with it. For starters I didn't like the hero much. He seemed okay at first but then he turned out to be a real weakling. It sickened me that he continued to sleep with his fiancee even after he'd decided she wasn't the woman for him. The heroine wasn't that impressive either. She clearly had self esteem issues and was convinced she wasn't good enough for the hero. Overall it was disappointing. Not what I expected.

I got this book as an ARC and promised to give an honest review. I love Jackson's writing. You can really feel the characters. If you let yourself know the lack of control a woman had in those times the story is even more realistic. This was another great story, a worthwhile read and a great adventure. It is worth the money to read this one.

This is a very well written story, and the author is obviously very talented, but I don't think it works as a romance. The hero is not kind to her and it was a bit too violent for my taste. To each his own.

Eva and Lachlan are strong when their tragic past should have broken their spirit. Overcoming is the theme of this book. And its saving grace. The brutality of the antagonist, the stepfather and Moron have me chills. It made me skip portions of the book. I am of the belief that such horror and pure evil should not be apart of a romance novel. Putting my belief aside, the author is excellent in that her novel captivates and holds the reader. With all my misgivings about the antagonist,I was unable to put the book down.

I didn't know this was going to be so full of violence and angst. The Hero, Lachlan was a bit too distant at first and came across as hard and non-caring, but I warmed up to him after awhile. He got better. I felt their connection and attraction for each other but even with that, it came across more as historical fiction than a romance, although Lachlann became tender with the heroine and there are lovemaking scenes.I believe the author is a wonderful writer who weaves a great story-it's just the specifics of this story I didn't love.

Just finished reading The Iron Earl. My first time reading this author and won't be my last! Loved the story and the characters of Lachlan and Evalyn. Anything centered in Scotland can only be good. At first I was dubious about the storyline, but the more I read the more I fell under their spell. Thank you for the great story, KJ Jackson!!!

Eva is a tortured women. Abused horribly by her stepfather, she devises an escape. Lachlan is the Scottish lord she chooses to help her. Their story is not an easy one. It is, however, a joy to see Eva emerge from her shell and become a strong person. Love and trust will do that to you. A thoroughly good read!

Evalyn and Lachlan The Iron Earl both got the love 💘 they wanted and needed .She went through hell to escape from her stepfather Lachlan was her salvation. And should read.Look for The Iron Earl : A Valid Of Vinehill by K.l. Jackson.

I have over 1700 books in my Kindle collection and this story was one of my top 100 favorites. It is poignant, suspenseful, loving and thoroughly enjoyable. I can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend this book and the series.

Another author would get 3 stars for this. Mr. Stephenson gets 2 because I expect better from him, especially at a high price.Short version: The book is interesting, sometimes funny, often shallow. The characters are one-dimensional (except Rebecca). The military jargon is bad. The use of letters/diaries/journals as the narrative works ok, but there's no framing story to explain why these things are collected, or by whom. The mechanics of magic are believable enough to suspend disbelief.I read at least one volume of the Baroque Cycle (The Baroque Cycle: Quicksilver, The Confusion, and The System of the World) every year. The characters are believable, consistent, and so well-developed over their lives that I can jump back into Quicksilver and remember young Eliza after having last read about older pock-marked Eliza in SotW and feel like I'm meeting her again. It takes place across such important historical events and does such a good job of putting characters in places of import with humor and subtlety that make it all just so fascinating.I've also read a lot of Clancy's Ryan books. Clancy did a lot of collaborative stuff, too. I remember reading the first Net Force book. I feel about The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O (dodo) the same way as I do about Net Force. It was fun. I remember liking the plot and the character interactions, but I can tell you nothing now of substance about any of them. Prior military, I think? One had a Plymouth Prowler? They were throw-away books. Fun, but not meaningful.Dodo feels like a read-and-forget novel that is leading into a series. It ends without resolution, and given that the former work these authors did together was a number of books in series, I'm expecting to see more of these. If they show, I'll wait for the reviews before deciding if it's worth the time/money. There are many things touched on but never utilized that a good edit would have removed, unless they will be needed later. Storing data in an ODEC, for example. In closing.. read it if you've got the time and the price comes down, but if you are a fan of NS, lower your expectations.

I wish I could return it and forget I ever saw this book. Many other negative reviews have covered many of my problems so I will just highlight the most grievous offenses. First too many stereotypical military/government/academical types just there to be obtuse, narrow-minded enablers of chaos (trust me on this one). A couple of "anachons" who were way too modern and savvy for the times they came from, especially the Viking. The arbitrary nature of the "shears" i.e. minor offenses cause disaster while big offenses did nothing. All of this though pales in the light of the giant self-fulfilling paradox on which the entire plot is built and which the characters involved don't even question. Everything could have been averted with a couple of questions before anything really got started.

The premise of the book is everything you would expect from a Stephenson book. A unique blend of science, society, situation all with a twist. It's one of the reasons I like his work. This starts out that way with a novel connection of Quantum Mechanics, Schroeder's cat, covert operations and witchcraft all around time travel. I was really looking forward to the book and for the first half it delivered, the only issue is that Stephenson forgot he needed to write an ending. Where other books had drama as they reach a climax, that never happens here. The book just fizzles at the end and leaves you with an ending that seems more like a pilot for a time travel drama on TV than a work of provocative fiction. This is really hard for me to write, but its the first book by Stephenson that I have read that I wished I could get my money back. It's the first book that I would suggest even fans avoid.I hate to say this as it has all the right ingredients, vivid and interesting characters, a great premise and an insight into bureaucracy that is both smart and snarky at the same time. Those are the real strengths of this book. The failure is in the plot and what it is driving to. There is a plot at the start, but then it fails to materialize. There is no real antagonist or villain.. Sure there is, but they are not as villainous as they shoudl be to drive a story. In the movies, they fault the director of a movie which has a great cast but does not seem to deliver. This is the case here. Not Stephenson's best and it may be his worst work.
