Jeremy Dauber is the Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Columbia University. He is the author of several books on Jewish literature, including In the Demon’s Bedroom: Yiddish Literature and the Early Modern, Antonio’s Devils: Writers of the Jewish Enlightenment and the Birth of Modern Hebrew and Yiddish Literature, and The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem, which was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. More like a scholarly PhD thesis than a review for the general reader. Dry, but thorough. Not easy reading.

Long and, surprisingly, boring at times. It is truly an academic piece. As expected.

A few days ago my curiosity about all the million ways American humor comes from Jewish humor would not be quiet anymore and I thought to myself, surely some professor somewhere has written a history of the ways in which Jewish humor has developed in response to and in spite of the Jewish diaspora, antisemitism, quotidian life and love, and the new garbage far-right movements of politics. I searched "Jewish Comedy" and this is the book I was looking for. Very interesting.

A very well written, as it says 'serious' history of Jewish Comedy. Too serious, and often too much pretentious use of language, which required constant Wiki checks to verify meaning. It's obvious that someone smart wrote it, and there's nothing wrong with an exceptional vocabulary, but it detracted from the read. The 'comedy' is good. But I was expecting more representative examples of 'funny', rather than the scholarly employment of language to elevate the analysis. Granted, it is a 'history', and offers a bit more insight into our historic prevalence to humor as a survival skill...but...I'd prefer more of the humor, and less of the scholar. It improves once it starts dealing with the 20th century.

One supposes that a very erudite book could be written about “the orange”. It’s history and it’s place among fruit of all kinds; it’s use in poetry and painting, and it’s varied and multiple facets. Then the fruit itself. Perhaps a chapter on its color, the discovery and history, through all ages, of the colors red and yellow, of their primacy, and how their mixture yields “orange” secondarily, and the possible meanings and implications of this. Perhaps a second chapter on the peel. How like, but unlike, skin and the metaphors and eroticism of skin. Then the sections, and the texture, and the juice...you get the picture. At the end of the day, in the excessive, idiosyncratic, and verbose dissection of the subject, you’ve dessicated the fruit so thoroughly that it has no flavor, no sweetness, indeed no “orange”-ness. You have missed the essential “suchness”of your subject.So it is with this book. Can there be a humorless book about humor? Surely, this book answers that question in emphatic affirmative. It stifles all humor in pseudo-insightful and unrelentingly eager efforts at being seriously academic and exhaustive. It is instead exhausting and finally, silly. To the extent that silliness is a component of humor, Jewish or otherwise, it succeeds. Perhaps that’s the joke!

Was a great gift for my 84yr old father.

Jeremy Dauber's history of Jewish Comedy is a tour de force. Yes, he's a brilliant scholar, but his book never loses sight of its appreciation and love of humor, as part of the human condition. His breath of knowledge and insights are staggering. For the ordinary reader, writings about humor generally are not very funny; but, Dauber's selection of topics and examples - including humor from biblical times to today's entertainment - is a real delight.

Scholarly, but boring.

This was an excellent book that brought to light much of what I did not know or understand. Gloege's thoroughly researched book filled in details of the history of my more conservative Christian brothers and sisters.The detailed history of how the leaders at the Moody Bible Institute were involved in shaping American Fundamentalism explained so much for me. I have been baffled by what ties together so many conservative Christians from disparate denominations and how they came to be culturally and politically aligned. Why do they focus on the culture wars while seeming to neglect the part of Jesus' message to feed the hungry, visit the prisoner, and stand up for the downtrodden? Now it makes sense. Leaders from MBI and their colleagues around the country began a network of people opposed to what was then modern Biblical literary criticism. Those heading up the "Fundamentals" project made their names in marketing, and they knew that they had to focus on what united them, ignoring where they differed. To do this, they needed to craft a unified story, including a focus on a Bible that was the literal words of God rather than the Word of God as written and debated by humans. They stayed away from creeds, for this might bring out the differences in their target audience. And they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in crafting a bloc that accepted their new conservative focus as being what the Christian faith had always been about. The details of letters and discussions from 100 years ago also explain the tendency for conservatives to discredit and disdain scholars, which makes me wonder if we will ever be able to find common ground.

Dr Gloege's examination and exposition of the history of modern evangelicalism, and role played by Dwight Moody and his namesake Institute in Chicago was eye-opening for me, an Episcopal priest of well over 30 years. As a product of the very "modernist, liberal, German theology" that all the principal actors described in this book abhorred, I was completely unaware of this history. Yet, given the current state of the Republican Party, and the strong role played by the (so-called) "religious right" since the '80's and Reagan Era, it was fascinating to discover the historical roots of a sept of Christianity that is at once fascinating and frustrating for a social and theological liberal such as myself. I highly recommend this book to other liberal church leaders trying to understand the thinking of our conservative (or downright reactionary) fellow Christians, if only to give us a means for engaging in a dialogue - as opposed to a diatribe.

Full disclosure -- I work / teach at Moody Bible Institute.First, the book is an enjoyable read. As far as the author's thesis goes, I will say that I will never be able to see the image of D. L. Moody again without thinking of the Quaker Oats "Quaker Man"! (Both are more or less images of the corporate brand.)Without getting too deeply into the theoretical-historical weeds I would just say the Gloege does not give enough credit to the broader theological commitments of men like Gray and Crowell (and Moody!) True, they were dispensational premillennialists -- but they were evangelical Protestants as well. The latter meant a commitment to more fundamental (pun intended) evangelical concerns; (of course, here one would note Bebbington's quadrilateral -- the four key elements of "evangelical"). This book is, of course, critical history (and a well done in that regard) with the focus of that discipline and all the required "historical objectivity" necessary for such a treatise; still, it seems to me that Gloege (and this would go for Matthew Avery Sutton's "American Apocalypse") does not grasp the mindset and worldview of "genuine believers." That is, in addition to all the motivations Gloege acknowledges (and uncovers) that drove Crowell and Gray he does not give due consideration (in my opinion) to the theology, the beliefs, and especially the worldview of these men as Evangelical Christians. For a better treatment of the history of twentieth century evangelicalism that does give due consideration to those matters (the theology, the beliefs, the worldview of Evangelicals) see Molly Worthen's "Apostles of Reason."

Deep historical of one aspect of Moody Bible Institute.

Excellent Book!! Cannot recommend highly enough. Tells the story of how modern evangelical Christianity was invented. Following notions invented between 1880-1920: "Personal relationship with God", "The Rapture", dispensationalim, and the generic "Fundamentals" of modern evangelicalism (versus the traditional creed based mainline denominations). This book really describes how Moody and his big business financial backers invented and, more significantly, marketed, modern evangelical Christianity.

An interesting look into the history and development of the fundamentalist/evangelical movement, especially its utilization of consumer-orientated mass-marketing. An insightful commentary on the current state of corporate evangelicalism.

A fantastic, thorough, and well-written study about religion and business in U.S. history.

This book is exceptionally written. The depth and breadth of primary sources are powerful. The book takes a realistic look at its subject, although some might consider its depiction as unflattering.

Modest sized book w/ parts being rather simplistic ("the amazing life of ticks"). But still, a great deal of good information & well organized. I used the book as basis to coordinate research for extended paper on RMSF. If you're doing a paper, I would recommend buying this unless it's advanced work (mine was an approximately 10 page paper for Microbio).

After being diagnosed with RMSF, I looked for resources to learn about this illness. This book is a bit pricey for its length. However, the information is directly to the point, describing the disease in detail in a readable manner (not too technical).

I always expect to love a Shaw Montgomery book and certainly love Casey! What I didn't expect was to see lots of myself in one like I did here. Although I'm now a senior citizen, I was very much like Casey (except female) when younger, very shy, very knowledgeable but painfully inexperienced and wishing for someone to take charge and show me the ropes sexually. Not so much Dom/sub, but teacher/student. As I read, it brought back those feelings because they were so truthfully and realistically written by Shaw. I am fascinated by excellent writers and how they can put down the words that bring out the emotions that sometimes have lain dormant for many years to the front of your life. That is truly an incredible talent!I also absofreakenlutely adored the scene where Eli takes Casey and Lane to dinner to try to loosen up Casey so they can find out if he's interested in Preston. Some other readers are calling it the Casey and Lane Drunk Scene. It is SPECTACULARLY HILARIOUS! I will caution you right now that there is a time about one-third of the way in where you will not be able to stop yourself from Laughing Out Loud so be sure you are in a space where you won't be embarrassed when reading it. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT, try to read this scene quietly in church, or at a boring science class lecture or at the annual company stockholders meeting because you'll be unable to hold back your chuckles and guffaws along with possible holding of your sides and even rolling on the floor laughing. Don't say I didn't warn you!Thanks for this book, Shaw, and now we need the UPS guy and Tyler, OK?

The Leashes and Lace series is superb and this latest addition (Casey) is wonderful. This is the story of the owner (Preston) and shy quiet Casey. Throughout the story you get to see glimpses of Casey's online blog and see him slowly with Preston help come out of his shell and into his own. During their story you get to catch up with Eli and Lane who are both Casey and Preston's friends/coworkers. Of course there is their wonderful HEA too!

This author never ever disappoints! Casey was painfully shy, Preston was a caretaker Dom with the patience of a saint. I wasn’t sure if this one would be a slow-burn or angsty....but I should have known Shaw would make it perfectly paced and I would love it! I don’t want to ruin the pleasure so just read it! Very, very light bdsm, sweet romance! This can definitely be read as a stand-alone but is much better if read in series order!

This entire series follows a great cast off characters that are wonderfully developed, nuanced, and relatable. Casey's struggle to accept what he desires, and to be able to communicate those desires is vividly portrayed. I love the way the author keeps the characters true to life, and so much fun! Each story is well developed, insightful, and its own kind of kinky. This story isn't as kinky as the others, but it makes up for it in sweetness! Must read!

Casey is so sweet and adorable, it’s impossible not to want to cuddle him.And Preston is exactly what he need.Love this series. Can’t wait for me.

I loved Casey so much. It was so interesting to see how much he grew in each of his blog posts. I loved watching him and Preston come together. I would love to see more of drunk Casey and drunk Lane. And what the heck is going on with the UPS guy?

I love the Leashes and Lace books, but Casey is my favorite. Preston and Casey are perfect for each other. Casey is adorably shy and Preston is his perfectly outgoing opposite. I want more!!!

l love hanging around Leashes and Lace ,so another story from all my cute and sexy models makes me happy.Casey is Lane's friend, and often visits him at L&L,he is also one of the firms accountants , so he does have a legit reason to be there .He doesn't go there praying to bump in to Preston, nope,the man has him all flustered and shy unable to make eye contact.Why does Preston make him feel like he wants fall on his knees for him?But Casey adores all the pretty lingerie, and sexy nightwear,he buys them and wears them secretly, loving how they make him feel.He unburdens all of his frustrations in his blog,his readers understand him, but why are they pushing him for more ?Preston is very , very aware of Casey,the sweet boy, calls to his dominant nature, but he looks easily spooked.Deciding he needs to take his time, Preston approaches Casey slowly,not realising that this is turning his boy in to a nervous wreck.The diva that is Eli has had enough of watching them dance around each other.He has to intervene, he needs to do something so big that Preston will have to take charge.Maybe a night out with Casey and Lane is what is needed,maybe a little alcohol to loosen their inhibitions,what could go wrong, right ?Omg, one of the funniest drunken scenes l have read for a long time ensues.Drunk Casey and Lane are totally bonkers, they are so sweet and cute and sexy all at once.What will happen when Eli calls Preston for help?Will he be mad and take Casey home ?Will Preston the Dom want to punish his boy ?How will Casey react to the way the night ends ?A well written, very sweet story, that has some lovely characters.At times frustrating , but with so much humour, you will love it.

The author used the heck out of a thesaurus when writing this book. The concepts in it are absurd. Common sense dictates a lot of what should be in this book, and yet it's regurgitated in a fashion that someone wants you to believe is a new concept. If you need the book for a class try to change that class. If you have to take that class just be aware of the mind numbing use the thesaurus the author used to bump up their word count. Check that block folks!

The book was a great learning resource, but the condition of the book was horrendous. The cover was separated from the text itself and there were many pages torn and or folded/written on. I have had a stellar experience with book rentals but this was by far the worst condition.

An excellent primer for any individual who will have people reporting to them or who will have Human Resources as part of their function. At times, it is a bit of a dry book because it's a textbook. But, it imparts knowledge and provides case studies that allows what is taught to be practically applied. I'm glad I purchased it.

Textbook came with the entire binding separated from the hardcover. Ill probably just use it like this, very carefully, til I finish my 8 week class since I cannot wait for returns or exchanges because my class already started. I better not get blamed for this.

It covers project management concepts, touches AVB (time sensitive networking for AV), HDBaseT, Thunderbolt, reading architectural drawings, standard practices, mounting, cabling, jam ratios for conduits, audio concepts, buzzwords you shouldn't use when talking about power to electricians, more networking concepts like IPv6, and much more. Overall the book is put together very well and is not a difficult read.

Excellent reference book on audio and video over IP networks. It covers essential topics such as AVB (audio video bridging), HDBaseT, Thunderbolt, and provides clear explanations of digital rights management and EDID with useful illustrations. A must have for anyone involved with AV and IT networks. I highly recommend it!

An excellent analysis of the mentality of today's milennials. Unlike many authors who rely on anectodal evidence or armchair opinions, Twenge dug into decades of testing results to document shifts in attitudes over the years. Yes, millennials often act (in the eyes of older folks) annoyingly "entitled." But it was their parents' generation that created this by trying to shield them from even the slightest difficulty or disappointment (think "participation trophies" and teacher intervention at the slightest hint not only of bullying but of "insensitivity" on the playground). If this subject interests you, and you would like to see hard data rather than opinion, you will definitely enjoy this book.

Generation Me is a thought-provoking presentation of Jean M. Twenge's research on generational differences. Twenge neither rants about today's kids nor completely empathizes with them; this balance helps hold the reader's interest. She cites a number of studies to back up her theories, and I see echoes of the truth in her data in both myself and my friends (I'm an early '90's baby). That being said, I also saw a lot of differences between what she said and what I see happening around me; examining alternative hypotheses would have strengthened Twenge's research. Still, Generation Me offers interesting points and data on the differences between generations.

This book is a good effort to take an analytical look at how a 'self focused' generation's mental health and overall well being is. It ranges from the 'everyone gets a trophy' mentality to the oft stated 'You can be anything you want to be'. Dr Twenge shows clearly how our society has encouraged children's self focus, not empathy. I only gave four stars because her one fault was to use way to broad an age range. She attempts to study about a thirty year range of births and the differences in technology make this the same as an 'apples to oranges' comparison.

There are footnotes and biography but it is incrdibly sloppy. She makes up references, runs her own surveys of very small samples, uses absolutes all the time (all, never, every., none, etc.). gag.One reason editors may respect a graduate degree is that the author has to pass a methodology course. However, the important things can be learned in freshman English.

Excellent overview of Gen Y - with plenty of data to support the authors conclusions. This is more a reference book than a how to - however it is a wonderful addition to any leaders bookshelf as there is understanding around this generation.

I’m reluctant to make generalizations about any group of people, though the truth is generalizations can serve as a guide. And so it is with Twenge’s work. I’ve taught college undergrads and now offer training programs in communication skills for businesses. In both settings I’ve worked closely with Millenials and I share many of Twenge’s perspectives.I think this is book offers solid insight into the myriad world of Millenials and this could be of invaluable help to anyone who teaches or supervises folks in that generation. I’ve recommended this book to several HR professionals!

Generation Me gave a very non biased looked at the "Millennial" hype. Pointing out flaws, strengths and factors in actions and behaviors, it can be beneficial of all ages to understand a generation that doesn't even understand itself.

This was a good read about a generation that I could not relate with - until this excellent book. Now I feel like I understand more about the generation is a whole, however one could see this as an excuse, perhaps even a crutch, albeit I’m trying not to look at it that way and rather I highly recommend this for anybody trying to understand the struggle that this generation is going through. Overall, the book is well written and an enjoyable read.
