It's funny because I got this book on audible and the first time I listened I was in the car. I wasn't feeling the the first chapter - it started off a little slow - and I wanted to turn it off and return the book. But since I was driving I couldn't use my phone to turn it off. THANK GOD I kept listening because it has since become my favorite book!!!I'm on a constant quest to reduce worry/stress and live my best life and in that spirit I've read/listened to pretty much every book on the topic of happiness/self improvement over the years - you name it, I've read it. I can say without a doubt this is the best, most impactful and life changing of them all. In fact, I listen to this for 30 minutes every day to reinforce it and plan on doing so indefinitely. Do yourself a favor and read/listen to this!

I truly believe this book can help anyone lead a happier life. If you apply the principles within it, you can change your mindset and your life. One of my favorite lines, "Your thoughts, not your circumstances, determine how you feel. An absence of negative thought brings forth a positive feeling." That is so true! Think about it. The part on moods was especially enlightening for me. So many of the insights in the book are things I think we all intrinsically know but maybe don't consciously think of or apply to our lives consistently. If you're someone like me that struggles with negative thinking, ruminating over made up scenarios in your mind, or even real past events, or are prone to moodiness, I think this book will be especially helpful to you. It was very helpful to me.

Richard Carlson's books need no introduction really. They are packed with common sense methods to change the way you approach your own thinking and views of the way you interpret life. For people who have struggled trying to find happiness (and not sure why they can't) his books encapsulate ideas and methods to "take a short cut" around your flawed thinking and realize how your own negative thoughts are sabotaging your enjoyment of life - and encourages one to simply ignore these unreal, frightening phantasms that are just thoughts in your head. Definitely worth the price and highly recommend.

This book is a Must Read for those who want to acknowledge the highs & lows of moods, feelings, and generally the way the mind works. Richard Carlson's books have most definitely become an indispensable staple in my book collection. I guess you'd have to read at least 2 of his books to get some quality advice from them, although this particular book gripped me like an invisible self-psychiatrist in getting a hold of my moods, feelings, and acknowledging separate realities and the way the mind works in all of us. It goes on to discuss the 5 principles1-Thoughts2-Moods3-Separate Realities4-Feelings5-Present Momentand then chapters on applying these principles into your everyday life and how they can work for everyone. Most of this is common sense, but nevertheless a real eye-opener in how, why, and what you can do to get a grip on these principles during depressed, stressed, and 'low cycle' times that we all go through in life. Most people know what the 5 principles above are to a lesser degree, but what you didn't know Dr. Carlson fills in the blanks of how & why they affect your overall mental health and what you can do about it, to thus (hence the title) get a better heads up with what you can do to clear the fog during moody or distressful times, or are having a bad day in general. I highly recommend the book..i.e.1) You Can Be Happy No Matter What by Richard Carlson 2) Shortcut Through Therapy by Richard CarlsonIf you haven't read them yet, do yourself a favor and do it at your earliest convenience before another book on fiction, self-improvement/self-help, because after you read these and start acknowledging and applying these easy to use principles your life will have a drastic change in bettering yourself. Applying the principles has nothing to do with complicated graphs or charts, and just by reading each principle and corresponding application of the principle, you will absolutely have a crystal clear way of understanding how your moods & feelings work for and against you, and NOT becoming overburdened by some of life's many pitfalls. I wouldn't be givning this book enough justice if I didn't say that the 2 books mentioned above(especially the one in this review)have become literally "Life-Shaping" in their own and have really expanded my thought processes to put those negative moods/feelings in 'Check' so they don't bother me as much as they used to. I firmly believe that anyone who puts some time aside and dedicates themselves to reading and remembering the things said in these golden little tomes will eventually be succeed in many different aspects in their own lives. I can't stress getting these two books enough. If 2 books were worth their weight in gold, these would be them. Gain control and harness your thoughts, moods, and feelings, and accept that the (So-called down days (low-cycle days) are only obstacles that push you back from achieving your maximum potential in crucial area's of your life. 5 Stars all the way baby!!

This is like 20 years of therapy, in one book. Change your life, read this. I have given 6 away, and read it 3 times over the last decade. Always a good idea.

Excellent book. This changed how I see my life for the better. I highly recommend it for anyone who ever feels overwhelmed by worry, fear, discontent, or any other negative feelings. It will help you easily recognize and gain control over any negative thoughts that pop up suddenly. I experienced a dramatic, positive shift in my own attitude from the moment I started this book and I quickly got really good at recognizing and dismissing negative thoughts as they popped up - the same thoughts that used to run on autopilot in my mind and eventually overwhelm me. He shows you how to easily master this. It's a quick tweak that once mastered can become a new way of life by the time you finish the book.

If you are truly ready to be happy and to stop holding on to your "story" of why you tell yourself you can't then this is a GREAT book. Recognizing the resistance to being happy and the addiction to being unhappy is the first, difficulty step that has taken me a long time to see. I was in the middle of this book when my mom suddenly became ill and passed away. I was able to recognize my own warning signs of unhappiness and deal with them in a more effective manner and I am moving forward in life rather than spinning in grief. I am truly ready to be happy, no excuses no it feels great.

This guy knows what he is doing, AND he knows how to explain up-to-date programming methodology. He makes complex topics more accessible and presents well-crafted, correctly working Android game source code. Can hardly wait for Mr. Cho's Android Game Development Part 2 - Cho's books could become modern game programming classics. The accompanying website lets you download progressively more complete code perfectly matching each chapter. In all, it's a book aspiring Android game programmers can really get into and get a lot out of.

I always wanted to get into Android programming. This was the third book I tried after The Big Nerd Ranch's Guide to Android Programming as well as Beginning Android Games by Mario Zechner/Robert Green.This book was simply more welcoming and provided a much more gradual start. I actually read through this book last year (around this time), and now after using the game framework to start my first big project, I decided a good review was well overdue. Of course, much has changed in the Android world over the past 2 years, but the essential takeaway hasn't: learning to build a simple game development framework for Android games!Even though I already had some Java and Android experience, the book is very capable of bringing an absolute beginner up to speed with the essentials of Java (and object-oriented) programming, which is absolutely necessary for a smooth transition into Android development.As a newbie to game development, the main benefit for me was learning to build a simple game development framework. While others feel the name of the book does not accurately represent the contents of the book, I'd say that Mr. Cho is spot on. In terms of what you will know at the end of the book, the name is correct.The game framework is clear, concise and easy to modify for a different game style without having to change much (or any) of the core architecture. I highly recommend using this game framework and attempting to build a completely different style of game (such as a shooter or a puzzle game), as it will deepen your understanding of it and give you new problems to solve! While there are simplifications in the framework, the book's companion site has additional resources.I also like that, at the end of the book, Mr. Cho points you in new directions for continued learning. I personally will be exploring libGDX next, and may be transitioning my current project over to it.If you're looking for a good introduction to simple game development on Android, this book is for you!

Great book. Well written and easy to follow. However it is outdated due to the fact that android studio is now the new standard for android development. To follow the book tutorial you have to downgrade your JDK to 7 as opposed to 8 which to me is a waste of time. Why bother learning outdated technology? I followed the book until the android part (making a game in eclipse for pc) and then stopped to begin with android studio instead as I want to work with current technology. I recommend you find a book or tutorial for game development in android studio as opposed to this guide. If I had of read it before android studio was released I would have rated 5 stars. Be weary to buy this book.

I can compare the energy behind this book as that of the-most-read " Android Programming - Big Nerd Ranch Guide". Both authors have the learner in mind !!!!! . Both deserve my 5 * . FYI, I hardly write reviews, but I'm so impressed with the way this book is laid out. You could tell he loves his craft so deeply. Please buy this book, if you want a single book to read for a 2D game programming. You may also like "Android game programming - by John Horton" where I really enjoyed the game story scripting that manifests into actual game, using Tiles . See you on Google play !

This was a very helpful book for a newbie programmer. I went on to learn libGDX after this and this book was a good step to take first. I would say this is good for learning how to make a basic game, but it will be lacking in a few important ways. This book doesn't teach openGL and other things necessary to make a modern, money producing game, but it is a great start. You could make some older arcade games after reading this book pretty easily. If you already know how to do that, then this book may not help you much. The next step after this is, for a newbie, is libGDX or AndEngine or other pre-made framework, in my opinion.

highly recommend for anyone who needs hands-on experiences in Android or gaming development. The codes are very clear and very easy to follow. I believe anyone who has 3 months JAVA skill can make a little game with this book. And it is very very easy to create your own game with the same framework introduced in this book. Actually I made my own game called "submarine terminator" and it is in google play store now.

I can say that I've enjoyed reading this book. I'm currently taking a class on film editing, and trying to take this up as a serious hobby. In The Blink Of An Eye is mostly just kicking back and listening to the author kind of ramble on about his editing experiences, and his thoughts on the process. What I think I got out of this book is some lore, and some vague ideas about how to approach editing, but very few specifics. The other thing that I got out of this book is an appreciation of how futile it is to try to learn film editing from a book. It is such a visual thing that even when he shows side by side still pictures in order to talk about a "cut", it's really impossible to visualize without seeing the full action.So I dunno, I recommend this book, it's not a waste of time. But if you are trying to "cram" for an upcoming film project or something like that, I think you'll be disappointed that you may not learn all that much that is immediately applicable.

I couldn't believe it when she told me the name of the author. Anyway, yes, same guy.This is an amazing book, a quick read. I happen to be shooting video recently and used to teach film theory. Somehow this book got by me. It is a great book not only for people who make movies but for people who are really into movies. A nice companion to other film theory books. I would also recommend the book "Understanding Comics." That might seem random but the two forms share a lot of principles, something that can be appreciated when you consider the function of storyboarding.

This is a WONDERFUL account of the brilliance that Hollywood film editors create through their craft. More than anything else, you will gain an appreciation for the painstakingly complex artistic process carefully detailed by Walter Murch. Murch is a legend in the industry whose artistic brilliance shaped such epic works as Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and The English Patient. In the Blink of an Eye goes deeply into the artistic process as well as view into the tools used by Hollywood film editors. This is a very informative and insightful read.

An awesome read; full of interesting facts, opinions, trivia and pretty much every theory you need about film editing. Murch is a master in his craft, and everything he has to say about both analog and digital editing--although some info is oudated, since the 2nd edition was released way back in 2001--is invaluable. A must-read for anyone interested in film editing or filmmaking in general.

I suspect this book was worth five stars the day it was written but that's been a while. The author's editing experenences are very interesting and his theories on editing make the book worthwhile to anyone currently editing. Unfortunately, too much of the book is used to consider the pluses of continuing to work with mechanical editors and film as opposed to working with the earlier versions of editing software. The title refers to a suggested length of a cut, and the whole part of the book dealing with editing theory probably makes this books still worthwhile, especially at its current price.

This book isnt about editing techniques, its about what editing is, what editing can be and why we edit and it will make you look at editing as an experience and a process involving emotions rather than a technical process of cutting simply because it might be time to cut. ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT, IF YOUR INTERESTED IN DIRECTING THIS BOOK WITH HELP YOU IMPROVE THAT AS WELL!!! if you understand editing, when you set out to direct a scene for a show or a movie the understanding of how things cut together or can be cut together will inform your directing decisions, you will begin to think in montages and will direct with an understanding of all the different ways a scene can play out and the editor with thank you (and if you are editing you will thank yourself) for giving him choices.

I've read quite a few film books and the problem with a lot of them is that are no longer relevant in a few years because the industry is always changing. In this book, Walter Murch talks about editing film when you actually edited film but his focus is so much on the theory of editing that even in today's digital age it is relevant. This is the best book on filmmaking I've read, but I may be a bit biased because I am editor.

This guy is a pure genius! If you want to know how to think like an editor, it's a look into the mind of a great one. It's also a very quick read. You can finish this book in two days and if your fast, probably a day.

Excellent and original when first published and maybe when republished, but there is only one point. Learning how to apply it is everything and this can only be done over time and practice.You can either buy the book or watch Walter Murch speak about it in a video online and save the money.

Leave it to Lemony Snickett to show my Grandgirls how to make friends with the dark. As I read the book aloud to them, ages 6 and 4 respectively, I changed my voice when The Dark was speaking. Something deep and raspy. Just for effect. They loved it and when I'd forget to assume "the voice" they'd remind me to "Be 'The Dark' for this part."The fact that the child goes looking for the Dark shows he's matured to the point of being curious about what the Dark can be; what it can show him; the possibilities. I was once certain a very scary thing lived in the dark beneath my bed ready to grab me by the ankles should I dare to put my feet down in front of him (why are the scary things always a "him"?) so I can relate to my granddaughters fear of going upstairs when the lights are off and no adult is up there.This is a very sweet book and helpful to put The Dark in perspective to a young and active imagination.

This is one of my son's favorite books that we have been reading to him since he was born. He is now two years old. It really makes the dark seem like less of a scary concept for children featuring a cute story about a little boy, Laszlo, and his experiences with the dark which is a character in the book with a voice. It lets children know that yes, there are scary things out there, or things that may seem scary, but this is how we can deal with them.The illustrations are also captivating for children to look at and are a great match to the story. There is a good contrast between light from the flashlight to dark.Well done, yet again, Lemony Snicket.

I didn’t buy this because my daughter’s afraid of the dark, so I can’t really speak to how well this would help children who have that fear to overcome it. I picked it up simply because my daughter love’s books, this had a cool look to it, and I enjoy the author. It’s definitely been a big hit. It’s not too long, there’s not many characters (in fact there’s really only 2, which are Lazlo the young boy and “The Dark”), but it’s fun. I’m requested to read it at least once a week, which is pretty amazing coming from a kid that doesn’t like a ton of repetition. If you’re just looking for kind of a fun and unique book for your young reader, then I don’t have any good reasons to tell you not to pick this one up.

My son loves this. He's afraid of the dark and it helped him express that and gave him a different perspective. I saw another comment where the parent was conveying that the dark was evil and trying to encourage the child or something like that. The book isn't like that at all. The dark isn't trying to be friends or have a lasting relationship with the boy. It's a brief and simple encounter with one -sentence statements from the dark and pauses where the boy is exploring the characteristics of his dark home. Then again, I also don't read to much into that and I suspect those who are more religious might see it no matter what.

Holy crap, my kids love this book like crazy. I read it to them constantly, and they get upset if I don't use a creepy voice for the Dark character. Seriously, this might be better than "Where the Wild Things Are"...

I appreciate Lemony Snicket's approach to scary topics: face the fear head on, and it becomes less scary.My oldest was shy of 4½ when we began reading this book. He's never been scared of the dark, but we've had our challenges with abandoned tunnels and dinosaurs causing bad thoughts if not nightmares.So maybe I'm being bad dad by sharing this book that takes a non-threatening topic, makes it scary, then shines a light on it to expose... nothing worth fretting over. But no matter, both kids enjoy the story and the art, and when the bages get really black, it's the perfect excuse for them to growl loud monster noises at each other,.

Laszlo, a young boy, is afraid of the dark. Seems like a pretty simple premise, but in the hands of Snicket (The Complete Wreck (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Books 1-13)) the reader should expect the unexpected. And he delivers by making The Dark an actual character - speaking lines and all - thus giving the staid "I'm afraid of the dark" story a fresh, unique spin. The ending is brilliant - literally. Klassen's illustrations are a perfect match to the tone of Snicket's text. The perspective that he uses when drawing Laszlo's flashlight beam is visually engaging and invites conversation with young readers.And speaking of young readers, don't worry that this is too scary for them. My 3&5 year olds listened with quiet interest to the story with no qualms, then promptly put it on their favorite bookshelf.

Grownups tell children not to be afraid of the dark, but children know differently. In this book a small child knows the dark lives in many places in his house, especially in the basement. One night the dark speaks to him (if read aloud it should have a voice that is softly sibilant). The dark lures him through the house and past many scary areas but ends up (of course) at the top of the stairs to the (oh no) basement. This story takes the form of many scary myths except in this story it is the child's bravery to go down the steps and conquer his fear that is important. A must read for young children afraid of the dark (and good for grown ups who may have some lingering fears themselves).

My classmates and a few of my instructors have agreed that this book could be better. When it comes to explanations, this book is great. However, if you looking for a book with built in explanations, wire connections and up-to-date technology, please look at another or shop around to find what you need.

This book has been very informative. It briefly discusses general PLC knowledge and goes more into depth with AB PLC 5 to AB Controllogix. I would strongly recommend this to any electrical technician.

The reason for the four star because the text book is almost similar to the 5th edition. For the 6th edition they added a few topics and questions. Bottom line is this book is up to date and it explains it pretty good.

Good book! Very informative and laid out well so far. I am only about 1/4 into it. If you are using this book on your own, outside of a formal class, contact the publisher for an answer key to the review questions.

It was an excellent book, but a little expensive.

Frankly, this book was a waste of money. We did reference it from time to time in class, but the professor's own notes and presentations were far better prepared and organized.

I loved how he encouraged Sarah to pursue her dreams and supported them. He even helped her. Watching him fall in love with her and learn what love was was so heart warming and just swoony.Sarah was a strong female. You can’t help but admire her gumption. She wanted to please her parents but not at her own happiness. Her and Felix were perfect for each other. They understood each other and were friends before their attraction came about.The two didn’t begin thinking of becoming more than friends. They began as two friends from childhood where one was helping the other. Felix was helping Sarah with finding someone to love and her business. This got them to be in a moment where their attraction came through. And once that happened neither could stop falling for the other. I loved how accepting Sarah was of Felix’s feelings but also how as she learned about him she became patient and understood where his views came from. How as she learned about him and who he is, she was patient and kind but also finding a way to show Felix love and what love is. Finding a way for Felix to see he is loved and has love around him.When tragedy hit Sarah’s world, Felix was there for her and her brother (his best friend). He helps Sarah explore herself and also get her to live again. To find her way out of the depression and see that she is alive. She can honor her parents but not lose herself is what Felix helped her see. They do have a tense time with her brother and this is what precipitates Felix learning about love. He is such a good guy and even when you wanted to smack sense into him you wanted to hold him and let him know he is loved and wanted.A great tale of love and patience. Of acceptance and support. A romance that begins as friendship and becomes more. The drama is minimal and the intimacy is wonderful on many levels. The exploration of finding yourself and the one who supports and accepts you and also encourages you to fulfill your dreams is seen here. We get a fun sweet and wonderful romance between two lovable characters that belong together.

Sarah is rather quiet, but has her friends, and she expects to be a spinster milliner. Her passion is hats, designing and making them, but it’s a secret, as no proper lady would dare to engage in trade.While Felix’s parents have passed and he plans to pass his title to his nephew, Sarah has two loving parents who are pushing her towards marriage, rather forcefully. But Sarah wishes to marry for love, not as a mere business arrangement. Felix offers to assist Sarah in the hunt for a suitor of her own choosing, before her parents can choose a groom FOR her. Although they are old friends, Sarah and Felix have begun to notice each other in a different light. At a planned gathering for just that purpose, the two are accidentally paired together with intriguing results. But not everything goes as planned.After tragedy strikes, Sarah and her brother Alex have to reassess their lives, and Felix, as their friend, wishes to make them happy. In doing so, Sarah begins to see Felix in a different light, maybe he isn’t as carefree as he wishes all to believe. Maybe demons from Felix’s past affect his present more deeply than he allows others to know. Could Felix need her as well?The two spend an increasing amount of time together and each finds they are pulled to the other like a magnet to a lodestone. Is it comfort they seek in each other or have they realized that life is to be lived?I really adored this one, because it is so simply and fully a romance. Yes, it has lovely characters and witty banter, but the emotional pull, the depth of feeling, the heartfelt emotion was wonderful. I highly recommend it.

Sarah Colton and Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, have known each other since they were children. Felix is Sarah’s brother’s (Anthony) best friend. Felix has seen what love and the lack thereof can do to a marriage. Sarah has given up on marriage after four Seasons. Instead, she has her sights set on opening a millinery shop. Her parents want her to marry. When Sarah balks at their plans, Felix steps in to help her find a husband. Felix hosts a 2-day house party that includes kissing games after dinner (I looked up “Le Baiser a la Capucine” to figure out the positioning described in the book—think Twister with a kiss). A mix up in partners for a Regency variation of 7 minutes in Heaven has Sarah and Felix in the same closet for a steamy interlude, but neither of them know who their partner was at the time. Later, when Felix is trying to cheer Sarah up after the tragic murder of her parents, the couple acknowledge that feelings unleashed during the house party need to come out of the closet. Both need to confront parental loss and disappointments in order to find their HEA. Great story with lots of other Untouchable characters along the way and brief glimpse of the ladies of Cavendish Square, Darcy’s spin-off series called The Spitfire Society.
