I've been at "The Shore" for summer vacations for all mylife, and I've recently become interested in photography.From those perspectives, I found this book to be quitenice in its selection and quality of images. ( 2004,so presumably these were mostly film photos, pre-digitialdominance.) I only had a little time with the book, boughtin a gift shop at Sunset Beach (with the Sunken Ship, an oldone-of-few concrete ship from WW-I (likely in the book)and given to my mother, a Jersey gal in late years, now.(-;

I am a proud Jersey Girl, and I have been going "down the shore" every summer since I was a small child. This books wondefully captures the very essence of the shore...all of the things that make it unique; all of the things that make it beautiful; all of the reasons why it is so magical. This is a fantasic book--with unbeatable pictures of the best place on Earth! The essays and quotes that are included also add to the experience. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the Jersey Shore! It is a little expensive, but worth every penny!

This was an interesting book of short stories by a fantastic author. The first story Paris for One is the length of a novella and the additional 8 are short stories. As with any short story collection, there were some that I really liked and others not so much. Instead of being all about 'happily ever after', these stories were a more realistic portrayal of life -- some had happy endings and some didn't but they were all about women and how they handled their lives and their marriages. My favorite was Paris for One. Nell, a shy English girl, plans her first trip to Paris with her boyfriend - who doesn't show up. Nell can either take the first train back home, stay in her hotel or go out and experience Paris. Her choices completely change her life and she is a different person at the end of the story.Read these short stories if you'd like a glimpse of the author's wonderful writing and then order one of her novels to find the wonderful characters she creates.

A novella-length story is first up and it is Nell “not the adventurous type” who embarks on a romantic trip to Paris, with Pete her beau. But at the Eurostar Terminal in London they engage in a text dialogue with makes it rather clear that Pete has no intention of joining her. She has even given up her girls’ trip to Brighton to spend a couple of romantic days with him. Arriving at the Gare Du Nord as you do on Eurostar – toute seule, of course – she has to sort out transport to her hotel but on arrival there she is dismayed to find the room has been double-booked. The first night sees her sharing with another woman. Such a grim way to start her weekend. She is more than ready to turn tail straight back to England.But of course this is the city of romance and she is soon enjoying the company of Frenchman Fabien… will the course of true love run smoothly?Then there is wittily titled “Between the Tweets” and tells of the machinations of Mr Travis, an erstwhile popular TV personality whose ratings have slipped. On Twitter he is being trolled by a woman who is claiming to have had a saucy relationship with him, denting his squeaky clean family-man image. A nice little twist ensues.In another story “Crocodile Shoes” the Yummy Mummies prevail, with a pair of red Louboutins that seemingly have magical powers (but then any girl knows that Louboutins can transform lives!). One woman encounters success whilst wearing a ‘borrowed’ pair.And a few stories later it is back once again to Paris for one of the longer stories. It is a dual timeline of two relationships 90 years apart, one set in 1912, the other in 2002. Both couples are newlyweds and the connection between the two becomes wonderfully apparent at the end. Liv, in the present, on her honeymoon with David, is very much a wife out of sorts. They are in Paris only for a few days, but he is intent on closing a work deal, leaving her to her own sulking devices. Back to the early 19th century and artist Édouard Lefèvre (no, not the French entomologist who specialised in coleoptera) marries Sophie, a country girl, perceived rather as a peasant sort by many of the people in his set. The cobbled streets and the bars and food of yesteryear, and the Paris of today are beautifully brought to life – from the magical Pont des Arts with all its love padlocks (the river below apparently has to be dredged regularly to remove the rusted tokens that have accumulated into the water) to the Louvre and swish hotels – this is a story to evoke Paris both past and present.This is an eclectic collection of short stories that will entertain and divert.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this wonderful gem of a book. It's a book of short stories, all from the perspective of women in some type of disturbed relationship. The first one, Paris for One, was my absolute favorite. It was also more of a novella than a short story. The others were about 15 pages each and were excellent. JoJo Moyes is a great writer who knows how to show a story and really engages the reader. I highly recommend this!!!

I really liked the first story, Paris for One. It's more like a novella, I guess - it's a little over 100 pages long (this is on my kindle so I'm guessing it's the same for the hard copy). I loved the story and, as usual, loved Moyes' writing style.The first story is followed by 8 short stories that were good, but felt like something I would have read over a blog instead of paying money for. I kind of felt gypped after finishing it in less than 3 hours.So while I enjoyed all the stories, I wouldn't go and recommend it to all my friends like I have every other JoJo Moye's novel I've read.

I am a big fan of Jojo Moyes so anytime she has a new book out I can't wait to read it. I love her writing style. She is so good at making you feel like you are really getting to know her characters. This was a different book for her because there was one longer story and then the rest were very short stories. The only thing I didn't like was the stories were sometimes too short. I wanted to know more!!! But that is me. They were still very well written and all were nice love stories. And each one different from the last. Really enjoyed this one :)

While I enjoy Jojo Moyes books this one was not up to her normal standard. It came acrossed as a "rushed" series of short stories instead of a fully developed storyline. I hope her next book is up to her normal stellar style.

My tomboy 9 year old daughter loved these books. They are super cheesy but they appealed to my resistant reader so 5 stars😂

This is one of my 10 year old's favorite books! She references it frequently.She really enjoyed making some of the recipes and learning new games. She loved it so much, she picked to give it to her 12 year old cousin for her birthday. I would recommend this for all tween girls!

I really enjoyed Marie benedict’s two previous books CARNEGIE’S MAID and THE OTHER EINSTEIN so was looking forward to her take on Hedy Lamarr. I was NOT disappointed as she delivered the compelling story of Hedy Lamarr. Benedict brought to life the little known history of one of the world’s most beautiful women and, more importantly, highly intelligent women.Hedwig Kiestler was born in Austria to a Jewish mother and father. While performing the role of Empress Sisi, she came to the attention of the munitions magnate Fritz Mandl. After a short courtship, his proposal of marriage was seen as a way to protect Hedy from the growing anti-Semitism of the time.Mandl spoke openly to Hedy about the armaments and munitions he sold. Always the curious one, Hedy read as much as she could about the arms her husband sold and listened in on conversations he held with business partners. The men never imagined that this beautiful woman had any interest in or understood their conversations.Mandl became more and more controlling and Hedy knew she had to escape his powerful clutches. She flees to England and then to Hollywood where Jewish actors and actresses were fleeing to as they could not perform in Europe. She quickly becomes one of the highest paid performers and is dubbed the most beautiful woman in the world. But over her hangs a cloud of guilt.Knowing what she did, could she have prevented some of the senseless deaths of European Jews? I preordered this book because I knew a little bit about the real Hedy Keisler. However I regret the choice of the author to write in 1st person voice. I couldn’t help wondering what the real Hedy said and thought. I found the story interesting, especially the early part about the relationship with her mother and father, as well as her teenage marriage to the fabulously wealthy Fritz Mandl. I actually was disturbed by her parents willingness to use her fame/ notoriety to “protect” them in the event Austria fell to Hitler. The book showed me Lamar's steely determination, even at the age of 19. I can see if you knew nothing at all about the actress' history that the book would be extremely interesting. But for me, it was light on development of other characters in her life. Time skipped ahead too fast. And I was left wanting.

"The Only Woman In The Room" is a true story about a wonderful person. It starts when Hedy Kiesler is a 19 year old aspiring actress in Vienna being pursued by Fritz Mandl the wealthiest man in Austria. He gained his wealth by selling munitions in the period leading up to World War II. Hedy is Jewish and her family, being fearful of anti semitism persecution, encourage her to marry Fritz for protection. Fritz was cruel and Hedy plotted to escape from him. She saved money for passage on an ocean liner where she met Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM studios, and eventually became the glamorous movie star Hedy Lamar. While Hedy was with Fritz she sat in on meetings as his trophy wife where discussions of war weapons were discussed. Incredibly, she became expert in the science of weapons technology, so much so, that she was co-inventor of a U.S patent for tracking submarine torpedos more accurately. Hedy Lamar was a truly remarkable woman. Very good read.

I can't say enough about how disappointing I found this book. I recommended it for my book group and led the discussion. As I read, I wanted to hurl the book across the room many times. I knew that Hedy Lamarr was a beautiful, complicated and brilliant woman. That she had escaped from a war torn Europe and possessed a genius mind behind her stunning looks. The first four fifths of the book covered her abusive relationship with her first husband, an inaccurate relationship with her parents (yes, she was close to her father and her mother was cold, but they never went along with her decision to marry her munitions mogul suitor), descriptions of her costumes and jewels, the controversy over her nude scenes and simulated orgasm in her first movie, her escape to America and, finally, finally, her invention of broad spectrum technology for which she received no recognition during her lifetime. The book failed to mention that she tinkered with inventions all during her adult life, that the baby she "adopted" because he was an infant refugee from Europe was really her biological son, or that she died a meth addict because she, like many studio stars of that time, was fed uppers and downers so she could work slave hours for the film moguls. While it listed some of her most famous roles, it failed to even mention her most acclaimed and well-known movie, the one that won several oscars, "Samson and Delilah," which co-starred Victor Mature. In short, here was a woman who yearned to be taken seriously all her life and then was given short shrift by this poorly written novel. I kept going back to the professional critic's reviews and just can't understand why they are favorable. Lamarr's story is so compelling and captivating. What a great book it could have been.

I loved Carnegie’s Maid so I was excited that Marie Benedict had a new book coming out. It is an interesting take on Hedy LaMarr’s life. However, one thing that irritated me was the reference to the “adoption” of her son James. He is referred to as a refuge from a European country in the book. The author portrays it like Hedy saved James. I know that this book is historical fiction, but from everything I read, Hedy said James was adopted only because he was actually her illegitimate son.

Fifty years as a comic book company is quite an accomplishment, but only when a certain level of growth can be demonstrated. Unfortunately, this book is 287 pages of stagnation. Marvel's formative years prove interesting and nostalgic, but 50 years later the company is still cranking out comics "the Marvel Way." This work falls short in its reference function of detailing Marvel's recent years due to the glutinous mass of material that would have to be collated--it would require a volume all its own. One of my favorite books as a kid, this has everything an 80s kid remembers fondly from Marvel, plus a gorgeously illustrated and curated history. I've given a few as gifts, they're great for any 9 to 90 year old boy.

I bought this book as a gift for my husband. Not only did it arrive in just a few short days, it was perfectly packaged. The item couldn't have been handled with more care and when it arrived my husband was so excited. We love the book and would definitely order again in the future. Thank you!

Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics is the most enjoyable comics-related history I’ve read thus far — but it’s not the best one. As with his similar volume on DC Comics (see Reaction Paper #5), historian Les Daniels’ fails to make clear where his allegiance lies: with unbiased history or corporate approval. Without making his intent clear, Daniels makes suspect the truth and fairness of this detail-rich account of Marvel’s history. Such suspicions are most glaring when controversies that have been well documented in other sources are mentioned only in passing, glossed over, or ignored altogether. For example, Jack Kirby’s departure from the company in 1970 — which some comic-book historians point to as one of the initiating events of the Bronze Age — receives only a page and a few polite comments from Kirby and Stan Lee (p. 145); Daniels account captures little of the acrimony other sources have suggested led to the split. The author also doesn’t discuss Kirby’s return to the company in the mid-1970s, subsequent re-departure, or extended, bitter battle with the company over original art; that last item generated many headlines in the industry trade press throughout the 1980s.A second example of potential whitewashing of controversy can be seen in Daniels material regarding Jim Shooter, Marvel’s editor-in-chief from 1978 to 1987. While acknowledging that Shooter “may have stepped on a few toes,” the author largely casts the former E-i-C as someone who was both business savvy and a friend of the creative talent (p. 206). Daniels writes: “He was concerned about conditions for artists and writers and he was convinced that making some changes would ultimately increase sales” (p. 183). Shooter himself is quoted talking about significantly increasing page rates, extending medical coverage and establishing incentive programs (p. 183). While all of this is most likely true, it is also common knowledge that many creators do not fondly recall Shooter’s tenure. Daniels does note that long-time Marvel writer and former E-i-C Roy Thomas left the company over a disagreement with Shooter (p. 185). But it’s a fairly well known fact that Thomas wasn’t alone, and that many of these old wounds remain. (I’ve personally witnessed this: At a Comic-Con International panel last summer, Bronze-era talent including Doug Moench, Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman all talked of leaving Marvel to escape Shooter — who they referred to as “he who shall not be named.”)It’s a shame that the intent of Daniels history is suspect, because the book, on a whole is an entertaining and informative read. The author clearly has access to primary sources, and the company-specific scope gives unique facts and angles room to breathe. A few examples relevant to the Bronze Age:• The importance of the “Kree-Skrull War,” a 1971-72 Avengers storyline that “demonstrated that plot lines could be extended almost indefinitely” and “solidified the idea that every comic book Marvel had ever published was part of an endless, ongoing saga” (p. 150).• There was a “conscious effort” to increase the number of minority and female superheroes (p. 158).• The great impact of art director John Romita, who provided many uncredited cover layouts and character designs, including initial designs for the Punisher, Ms. Marvel and Wolverine (pp. 161-63, 166, 172).Such nuggets of information are gold to the comics historian. With the addition of a simple statement of intent and description of methods, Daniels book would have been invaluable.

Marvel Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics is a well-presented but incomplete volume that I would highly recommend for those interested in the history of pulp fiction and comic books, especially Marvel Comics.It is a brilliant summary of a large portion of the genres, formats, and marketing strategies of Marvel Comics, which dates back to the 1930s and 1940s. Even a reader who is not particularly a comics fan will likely find this book fascinating and enlightening.To me, this publication is a decent effort to document the history and development of the superhero fantasy. Introduced in this publication are highlighted stories and photographed covers of the various pulp fiction magazines, including Marvel Tales, The Spider, Weird Tales, etc., all of which were prevalent in American dime stores and contained various tales about time travel, unlimited atomic energy, ghosts, and alien invaders. Though these fantasies were popular, the pulp novel editors, most notably Martin Goodman, eventually needed to find a way to publish their stories at a pace in sync with an accelerating, thus increasingly demanding, society that was producing faster machines, trains, planes, and automobiles.Thus was developed and introduced by Goodman, along with illustrator, Bill Everett, what would be the very first issue of Marvel Comics, which has its cover photographed in miniaturized form as displayed in this book. So according to the following pages, the cornerstone of Marvel Comics was laid, and there was to be no turning back.In Five Fabulous Decades, each page is glossy and contains several photographs in color of the various aforementioned pulp fiction works along with the very early issues that would lead to an expanding Marvel Universe. It is also stated that contrary to what many comic book history writers have informed their respective readers, the creation of the comic book itself did not immediately replace and eradicate the pulp fiction magazine, because pulps continued to be printed well into 1955.All in all, Marvel did a good chapter-by-chapter sequence, bringing forth names of the great contributors to the comic book universe. Some very poignant moments are presented, especially in the 1950s when the comic book medium comes under scrutiny for presenting violent images. Outrage, according to the book, was so loudly expressed by individuals who alleged the comic book industry was corrupting America's youth that matters were taken before the Federal government and ultimately, Congressional hearings were being held so as to determine the link between comic books and juvenile delinquency. It is then stated that, as a result, the reputation of the comic book industry was maligned and left many editors, publishers, and illustrators without work.Following this crisis passage is a long-winded narrative of the Marvel Comics resurgence in popularity in 1961 that would spawn the creation of heroes such as The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spider-Man, as well as the return of old favorites, such as Ka-Zar, Captain America, and The Sub-Mariner.
