This is a beautiful book. I so wish it had been around a bunch of decades ago! The book covers so many vital aspects of being simultaneously female and sane in this culture today. Here are a few examples, some of which were just not talked about in those earlier days: cultivating good relationships with friends; dealing with other girls who can be competitive; asserting oneself with healthy, sensible boundaries; coping with challenges in school; defining and maintaining a healthy relationship with technology; addressing body image issues and the nonsense (!!!!) that the media feed young women about physical appearance; understanding emotions; spirituality; and above all, ways to develop & nurture an airtight connection to one's own deeper self. I love that author LIndsay Sealey encourages girls to find a place of stillness and silence where they can hear their own evolving voice of reason and strength as they grow more independent. So much good for preteen girls - so many fine ideas for protecting them from the onslaught of less constructive attitudes, pressures, and incessant noise from the outside world.This book would make a great gift for parents, teachers, and anyone else who has anything to do with young girls. The book is attractively laid out and presented, with numerous uplifting quotes, a "Cultivating Connection" section at the end of each chapter, and a final "Resources" chapter full of positive suggestions for further growth. Having grown up in a very different age, ("Always let the boy win, girls!) ( "We don't need to have lab sciences for girls - they'll just get married and have babies." - spoken by a professor at a women's college) (Girls can only be nurses, teachers, secretaries, or wives and mothers.") etc. etc. etc., I so appreciate the strong, empowering messages here that can help young girls (and perhaps some of us older ones!) keep focused on the things that really matter.

As the father of two girls quickly approaching the dreadful teen years, I’m willing to listen to any advice that may assist me in preparing for that adventure. Lindsay Sealey’s GROWING STRONG GIRLS offers practical guidance on how to adapt and manage the challenges facing girls these days.Unfortunately, growing up these days isn’t has simple as it was when I was a kid. Yeah, the “everything is relative” argument works on some childhood issues, but the internet and social media is a beast I couldn’t have fathomed as a child … it changed everything. What I like about Sealey’s book is that while she encompasses the full spectrum of girl-issues, she spends a good amount of time dealing with the internet throughout as it tends to wrap its tentacles around many critical aspects of girls’ lives.GROWING STRONG GIRLS is divided into twenty-eight easy-to-digest chapters. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of life that impact young girls, starting with the premise of being true to one’s self and covering other issues as “mean girls”, dealing with setbacks, social media, planning ahead, etc.. What I liked about the book is that the chapters all follow a pattern that thoroughly explain/detail each topic and end with colored inset labeled “Cultivating Connection” that suggests conversation starters with daughters that incorporate the advice/lessons/objectives Sealey writes about. There are also additional colored insets and sidebars at the end of chapters that provide resources (books and websites) for both girls and parents. Motivating and insightful quotes from well-known females are peppered throughout the entire book. GROWING STRONG GIRLS maintains a positive position from beginning to end … the entire book is aimed at being uplifting and encouraging and I did not find any aspect of the book to be alarmist, gloomy or negative.While I applaud the uplifting/positive approach to the subject matter, GROWING STRONG GIRLS tends to be a little “sugary” at times. As I read, I felt that the author was speaking to females/mothers not fathers. It would have been nice if the author would have incorporated more of a father’s perspective into the conversation and taken less of a girl-speak tone … I see my role as a father is being critical in my daughters’ ability to establish/cultivate relationships with males throughout their lives. But, for the most part, Sealey offers tangible food-for-thought on how girls develop emotionally: the self-criticism/insecurity (everyone has flaws, those flaws make you unique), overcoming setbacks/failures (failing doesn’t mean you’re a failure … turning setbacks into learning lessons), nutrition (food as fuel for a healthy life, not a crutch) and social media (being yourself, not how others want you to be). I did get a chuckle out of the list of positive role models for girls: Simone Biles and Bethany Hamilton (sure) … Lena Dunham (huh?). One aspect of the book that I liked is that it does not ever seem to take a preachy approach and approaches the subject matters in a discussion-oriented format. As a parent, I found it helpful in pointing out issues and solutions that I might not have considered … the guidance is to better inform parents in developing an approach to their growing daughters … it does not attempt to tell you how to parent.Overall, GROWING STRONG GIRLS is a nice resource to get parents (mothers and fathers) thinking. While I felt the material appears to be aimed at females, I certainly find it being a decent source of information for fathers as well.

This book has some very good resources in it for parents of girls 9-16. It talks about what being strong means, but more than that, it gives you simple ways to cultivate meaningful conversations. It offers good suggestions to adults of different kinds-Parents, Teachers, Coaches, Mentors. It has activities you can do, questions to ask, and reasons behind all of those. I found that the theory portions were a bit repetitive, but that was OK b/c the practical advice was so that made it worth the read. I am so glad I found this now (my daughters are 6 & 8) and there are many things in here about being intentional with my relationships with them that I am going to be able to utilize. Overall, it's a good book with very well organized and thought out practical applications that will have you encouraging your girl to be strong!

I have found this book to be so helpful when communicating with my daughter. It has lots of conversation starters to get us talking about things that should be addressed, but can be difficult to bring up. The book talks not only about a girl's relationship with parents, but also how she should develop and maintain relationships with other people. It points out that a friend who will easily dismiss you for her own gain is no friend at all. It also covers social media, which is an issue I never would have dreamed could be a problem when I was growing up and when I first had kids of my own. Basically, this book shows the steps to help your daughter find her confidence, high self esteem and make good choices in life. Many of the lessons in here can also be applied to boys, making it a good book for parents of any gender.

About the Author

Denise B. Dailey grew up in Brazil, the daughter of a French father and a Chilean-French mother. She has the unusual ability to dispel prejudices. I have a new view of Pakistan and a renewed hopefulness about humanity. Ms. Dailey’s faith in the goodness of people sings throughout her book, but never reaches the area of polemics.And politics? She extinguishes complacency and dispels the idea that one person can't make a difference. Ms. Dailey creates a compelling case that we must be more than vigilant of the needs of powered politics and bureaucracies and does it through feeling the soul and geography of the people, rather than a hint of polemics.Visiting Pakistan is a memorable read, and a memorable journey.

In her book, Listening to Pakistan: A Woman's Voice in a Veiled Land, Denise B. Dailey writes about her month long trip in 2006 on the Karakoram Highway from the border of China into Pakistan along with her husband, the tour guide and three others. This true tale offers a clear and compelling journey through Pakistan's ancient history, its vast and wondrous terrain, and its current and complicated culture. This is an important odyssey in a world that's very much connected to our own political balance, but which many of us in the West know so little about. And what we do know is often distorted and inaccurate.As many have already said in these reviews, Dailey writes in a voice that is both clear and lyrical. My favorite sections are when through patience and interest she manages to connect with the people of these regions. One early morning while the party is in Skardu, Dailey observes a man struggling to drag away one of the young willows that had half-fallen in the river overnight. She stands at a distance for a long time observing the ingenuity and concentrated effort as, trip after trip with only a small hatchet, this man finally managed to turn this whole tree, this treasure, into fodder for his goats and wood for his fire.I have traveled very little outside of the U.S., so I was in particular awe of these six people being driven by van over roads that were prone to erosions and avalanche. Sometimes when their vehicle must squeeze over to allow room for a passing truck, they are only a few feet away from a plunge over the edge into the raging Indus river hundreds of feet below.

Dailey provides a rich description of the people, places, and customs she encountered in her travels through Pakistan. A seasoned traveler, she does not shy away from the chasm of differences in culture from west to east. Where I found myself cringing at her descriptions of accomodations, hygeine, and food, she embraced them non-judgementally. Her descriptions of the rugged scenery are breathtaking. Accounts of diverse personalities and her encounters with women, children and, especially men, are intriguing, leaving the reader wondering if the exchange will be positive or stifled by Muslim gender customs. Dailey is fearless, willing to take a chance on engaging the Pakistani people to hear their hearts, their dreams, and their needs. I would love to see color photos of the places she describes and hear the story of each souvenir she brought home. Having said that, however, the story is the prize.

"LISTENING TO PAKISTAN: A Woman's Voice in a Veiled Land" is a beautiful book, with compelling sketches of life in a land that remains unfamiliar to most of us, in spite of the focus of news reports from this area of the world. Denise Dailey's writing is clear, vivid, and elegant...in short, brilliant. I am savoring every word. One beautiful sentence after another pulls the reader into the towns and villages of Pakistan. Her compassion toward many of the subcultures she encounters is extraordinary. She seems to bring the skills of an anthropologist, naturalist, geologist, biologist, gourmet chef, birder, gardener, linguist, educator, and humanitarian to bear on her experiences in Pakistan, and I feel the richer for her keen participant/observer insights. This book will undoubtedly appeal to a wide audience, especially to people interested in the welfare of children and women worldwide. Here's to more books by Denise Dailey!

This book sat on my table for a few months before I picked it up. I'm sorry I waited, as the author's writing style drew me into this land of harsh terrain peopled by survivors living in a culture we find difficult to understand. Ms. Dailey paints a picture rich in detail without the addition of cumbersome information. My attention is riveted to her story as I travel with her and her husband through this land of contradictions.

I was listening, seeing, tasting and feeling frustrated throughout this wonderful book! Denise Dailey's words put me there! Her story is so vivid and compelling that I am now saved the difficult journey of firsthand discovery. Her ability to make me feel that I was part of her travel companions is unmatchable! I could not have learned what I now know (because of her),because my level of frustration at not being allowed to truly get into deep and meaningful discussions with the women of these areas would have blinded me to acceptance of the culture's demands on them. I'm usually a Lonely Planet girl, but their guidebook for Cuba was oudated, so I switched to Rough Guide as it was the most recently published. This may just be the best guidebook I've ever used. The writing is spot-on, clever, and witty, and provides great frames of reference for understanding the history and culture, as well as alerting you to scams. The maps, especially in Havana, were lifesavers.Keep in mind, though, that this is Cuba. Things aren't always done here "by the book", but this guidebook is an EXCELLENT resource and will give you an idea of how things "should" go.

Just got back from a week long trip (June 2017). I chose this book because of all the travel books, this was the most recently updated edition. That being said, as long as that statement is true, this is unfortunately probably better than nothing if you are planning a trip to Cuba.Complaints:-The currency section was incomprehensive; it failed to explain the complexity of the reverse rates.-Restaurant recommendations were fake. To be fair, the majority of restaurant options in touristy areas (like Old Havana) are all mediocre anyways, but the recommendations were completely bogus.-Hotel descriptions didn't seem exactly accurate. Although I only stayed at 1 hotel in Old Havana, I visited a lot of the major historic hotels to check them out, and they clearly were misrepresented as well.-Transit descriptions were also incomprehensive. It was not as easy as "just take a taxi or go to the train station." There is alot more hassle and difficulty involved with getting exactly where you need to go for a fair price.

A great guide in many ways and when used with Lonely planet makes for handy cross referencing. Tends to tell it like with its reviews. The only problem with it is the maps. Why do they have those ridiculous maps where different things are denoted with either a numbered coloured square or circle yet the maps have no grid reference to find anything. If you are consulting it on your kindle paperwhite as I was last Cuban trip there is no way you can tell what is what because for a start they all look the same but mostly because without the grid is is impossible to find them. That goes for using the hard copy as we are using for Cuba this trip and did just recently for Sri Lanka. You still take a long time trying to find a green circle with the number 3, so much easier with an A-Z, 1-10 grid like Lonely Planet. Still the book is very detailed and certainly provides excellent information

Perfect companion on my trip to Cuba, especially since accessing the internet in the country can be so difficult. I was able to book a casa particular in Havana through one of the guesthouses listed in the book. Would definitely recommend.

Point Guard ONE This was how it happened sometimes: You didn’t want to stop, no matter how long you’d been playing. That was the way Gus Morales felt right now in the gym at Walton Middle School, playing one last game of two-on-two with his best friends in the world. It was Gus and Teddy Madden against Jack Callahan and Cassie Bennett. Jack and Cassie had won the first game. Gus and Teddy had won the second. Now the score was 10–10 in the third, game to eleven baskets, you had to win by two. Gus had been feeling it from the start, making left-handed shots from all over the court even with Jack guarding him most of the time. And Jack Callahan could guard anybody, because Jack was one of those guys who took as much pride in his defense as he did in his offense. But Jack wasn’t the problem right now. Cassie was. She was suddenly matching Gus shot for shot, as if they were playing a game of H-O-R-S-E. Jack had carried their offense for much of the first two games, but not only had Cassie gotten hot, Teddy was getting tired chasing her. It was a bad combination for Gus and Teddy’s team. No, check that. It was a terrible combination. And Jack was taking great pleasure in feeding Cassie the ball. He knew Gus Morales as well as anybody, and he knew that as much as Gus hated losing, he really hated losing to Cassie. In anything. It was just pickup basketball, friends going against friends. It wasn’t the league championship football game Gus and Teddy and the Walton Wildcats had lost the previous Saturday to the Norris Panthers. Jack hadn’t been out there with them because he’d hurt his shoulder early in the season and hadn’t been cleared to play sports again until today. But this two-on-two game still felt like a championship after the way they’d been going at each other for an hour. Maybe it was just the championship of this one afternoon, and having the gym to themselves, which always made them feel like they’d won some kind of lottery. Maybe this was just one more occasion when they were playing for the championship of each other. Everybody on the court wanted to win. More importantly? Nobody wanted to lose. Jack had just gotten a put-back after a rare Cassie miss to tie the game. They were playing winners out, which meant they kept the ball if they scored. Jack had it on the left side. Gus backed off, practically daring him to shoot. Usually that was a huge mistake, because when the games counted, you always wanted the ball in Jack Callahan’s hands. But Gus could see that Jack was having too much fun being Cassie’s assist man down the stretch to think about hoisting one up. It never changed, even as they went from sport to sport and season to season: the only stat that ever mattered to Jack was the final score. Jack dribbled to his left now, stopped suddenly, then whipped a pass across the court to Cassie, who was to the right of the foul line. “Teddy,” she said as soon as she caught the ball, in a singsong voice, “I’m coming for you.” “Leave me alone,” Teddy said, giving her some room, hands on his knees and looking officially gassed. “That is a big old no-can-do,” she said. “It’s you and me, big boy.” Teddy kept his eyes on Cassie but found enough energy to yell over to Gus and Jack, “Make the bad girl stop.” He was done, though. They all knew it. He had been trying to keep up with Cassie for three close games, finding out for himself what anyone who’d ever tried to cover Cassie already knew: chasing her was like chasing the wind. She was as fast dribbling the ball as she was without it. And she could shoot. Boy, could this girl shoot. She could also chirp, the way she had just now, telling Teddy she was coming for him, calling him out one last time today, maybe even about to call her shot. Gus wasn’t much of a trash-talker. Neither was Jack. Neither was Teddy, as funny as he was. But all of Cassie’s talk was just part of who she was, and they accepted it, mostly because she could back it all up. She started her dribble with her right hand and took a hard, quick first step, as if she was about to drive past Teddy. But as soon as he bit on the move and backed up even more, Cassie stepped back. She created some very nice space for herself, and put up another set shot that seemed to float all the way up to the rafters before it finally came down, softly, through the net. It was 11–10 for her team. Still their ball. This time, though, Cassie rushed her shot, trying to end things right here, and missed. Teddy got the rebound, threw the ball out to Gus. They had a chance to tie. Maybe it was going to take another hour for somebody to get ahead by two baskets. Fine by Gus. Jack came running out and got right up on Gus before Gus started his dribble. “Gonna be like that, huh?” Gus said. “Would you want it any other way?” They both knew the answer. All four of them on the court knew. You couldn’t be in this group and not throw everything you had at the other guy. Or girl. Gus decided to try a move he’d been practicing in his driveway. He was going to put the ball down with his left hand, as if he was the one who wanted to drive that way. But as soon as he did, he was going to whirl and go to the right. Using his right hand, his off hand, was something else he’d been working on as he got ready for basketball tryouts this Saturday. Might as well show it off now to the best defender in Walton. Gus tried to sell Jack on the idea that he was going left again. Jack moved with him, overplaying, trying to cut him off. As soon as he did, Gus planted his right foot, spun around so he was facing the basket at the other end, and put the ball on his right hand, ready to cut to the middle, feeling Jack on his hip, knowing he had a step on him, at least. As he did, he heard Teddy yell, “Gus!” Too late. Cassie had made her move as Gus made his, doubling him from behind, stealing the ball cleanly, turning defense into offense that fast. She dribbled back out to the top of the key because that was the rule; you had to take it back there after any change of possession. As she did, Teddy pointed to Gus, telling him to take her, as Teddy moved over to guard Jack. “Been wishing you’d make this switch all day,” Cassie said, smiling. “Didn’t you ever hear the one about being careful what you wish for?” Gus said. Cassie didn’t answer. She was looking into his eyes, still smiling. As much as Gus was enjoying the moment, Cassie was clearly enjoying it more. This was exactly where she wanted to be. This was Cassie, 100 percent. She dribbled with her right hand, then with her left, then her right again, as if she had the ball on some kind of string. Gus told himself not to watch the ball, to watch her, try to get a read on whether she was going to drive or pull back the way she just had on Teddy. She decided to pass instead, off her last dribble with her right hand, her eyes never leaving Gus’s. Gus took his eyes off Cassie, though, just for a split second. He wanted to see where Jack was, how open he was, decide in another split second if Teddy needed help. As soon as he did, Cassie broke for the basket, and the ball came right back to her: a perfect give-and-go. Gus scrambled to catch up, but now he was chasing her in vain the way Teddy had, watching as Cassie took Jack’s bounce pass in stride and made the layup that won the game for their team. Cassie stood underneath the basket, hands on hips, staring at Gus and looking like the happiest kid in Walton. Gus said, “Is this the one where you tell us that girls rule and boys drool?” “Never,” she said. “I find that sort of trash talk sooooo uninteresting.” “On what planet?” Gus said. Cassie laughed. So did he. Even now, he didn’t want the day to be over. But it was all right, he told himself. The basketball season was just starting. Gus Morales just had no way of knowing it wasn’t going to be the season he expected. Not even close.

Arrived as promised which was needed as my son was reading this book for Accelerated Reading Program. Very happy with purchase. Our son loves Mike Lupica books - entertaining subjects for teen boys with life lessons. I would gladly purchase from this seller again.

My 10 yo loves this series of books. Unfortunately he will not know the end to this particular book since he left it on the transatlantic flight to Sweden.

I used to love reading Mike Lupica books to my son. We have been reading Lupica books together for years even though he can pretty much read them by himself now. I say used to because this book has changed all that. Instead of writing about sports and sticking to sport-related issues, Lupica has apparently joined the mindset of the NFL and taken to promoting his political views in public through his children's books. He makes over-generalizations about politics and President Trump and inaccurately discusses current and proposed immigration policies. This is supposed to be a children's book. It's bad enough that I have to explain to my children that what they hear in school is not always accurate and that they need to research the truth behind statements, but now I have to do with children's book too. Really?! This book was so disappointing. Lupica has lost a young fan because he felt the need to buy into the mainstream media's mis-characterizations and reiterate them in a children's book allegedly about basketball.

Fun book . Life lessons - positive messaging .Your kid loves bb - he will love the Mike Lupica books and he will learn a lot from them - not just about bb. About friendships , morals, tenacity, etc etc !

Bought it for my third grade granddaughter who plays travel BB. I read it too and was thrilled with the themes of the book and accurate details of playing travel basketball. Loved the themes of friendship and girls being treated fairly. Great match for young basketball players who has some basic knowledge of the game. Inspirational book for my granddaughter.

This is a very informative book. While I'm not looking to go underground or off- grid, I will be making changes to protect my privacy online. I was outraged by the decision made by our country's legislators to allow Internet providers to disclose and sell the online browsing histories of their customers, which could affect prospective jobs and insurance. For example, if you or your child have a health issue or disability, and you search the Internet for information, a prospective employer who has access to this browsing history could interpret this to mean you will take more time off from work, or be more of a liability with insurance. This is just one type of example the book brings up, among numerous other situations I would never have even thought about. Great book, and thank-you, Kevin Mitnick!

Where do I begin? I've been a computer geek my entire life. Well, since 1982, anyway. My dad bought me a Commodore 64 computer back then. I can't hardly remember a single day that has passed since then that I haven't had a computer in front of me at some point during the day. Heh, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing!Anyway, as a developer and security enthusiast, I've always been interested in the hacking scene. Back then, when Kevin Mitnick and Kevin Poulson were in the news because of their "activities", I was glued to the t.v. I wanted to know everything they did! See, the thing is, I was like them. I craved knowledge. I wanted to explore that hidden and forbidden world of the byte and the baud that consisted of inter-connected mainframes and central stations via phone lines. I dialed into a lot of "boards" (BBSes) and got "forbidden knowledge" of what they used to call "phreaking" (phone hacking) from text files uploaded by phreakers. I thought it was just fun and games and never really did anything with the so-called "power" that I had gleaned from those text files.Fast forward to today, things are a lot worse, security-wise, with regards to computer security and threats to your private information. Especially since our daily lives are now entertwined with this ubiquitous thing called the internet. Every interaction we perform in our browsers, or internet-enabled applications, leaves information and trails that can be used against us. Our phones, even our automobiles, can be used to track us via GPS. Our credit card purchases can be used to build profiles of us that can be bought and sold to third party customers. Recently, the current U.S. Republican administration repealed a bill that would've prevented ISPs from selling your browsing information to private parties. Nothing you do online is private anymore. Nothing. This isn't like information that Facebook and Google collect on you. The ISP information is every single page that you go to in your browser. Think about this, for a moment: You have a medical condition. It's being treated and no one but your closest family knows about it. Like almost everyone with your condition, you browse online about it and have joined online support groups. Your child also suffers from a condition. They are autistic. Like almost any concerned parent, you look online to learn more about you child's condition and, too, to share your experiences and learn from others in similar situations. Recently, you've applied for a new job through a recruiter. They assure you that you're a perfect fit based on your resume and your phone screening interview with them. They want to pass your resume on to the company now, which you give your consent to do so. Now, the company that will be doing the hiring does something that, in the past, they couldn't have done: They buy your browsing history from your local ISP. They don't need your consent for this. Your browsing data is considered the ISPs property now and can be sold as a commodity that is tied directly to you. Your prospective employer can now see that, based on your browsing history, that you have a medical condition and a child with autism. Which, more than likely, means you will probably miss a lot of work. So, they do what any good business will do: They pass on your resume. You don't even get a chance to interview with them. Your resume gets deep-sixed based soley off your browsing history and nothing else.Now, with that nightmare scenario fresh in your head, I want you to understand that when I say this book can help you to avoid such a situation, I really mean it. From encrypting your email, to setting up a VPN, to using the anonymous Tor Onion browser and other security methods, this book can help someone that doesn't know anything about internet security by showing them how to secure their private information, their browsing habits, their email, and all online activity. Seriously, in this day and age, it's almost a sin not to be aware of at least the basic dangers out there in "cyberspace". With this book, you can be very sure that if you follow the steps provided, you'll be very secure from most of those threats.

This book addresses a great topic: The Art of Invisibility. The subtitle could have easily been: Why you do it, how you do it and what happens to you if you don’t do it.I’ve read all of Kevin’s books and I always keep a ballpoint pen and bright yellow marker at hand so that I can mark those special tidbits I want to remember, or refer back to at a later date. This book is so chucked full of information, I literally highlighted almost every paragraph and page.The theme of the book is that we are all being tracked. If you use email, you are being tracked. If you visit a website, you are being tracked. If you use a cell phone, or shop at the market, drive a car, use WiFi or have a refrigerator that’s hooked up to the Internet, you are most likely being tracked. Do you use a credit card with a little square, silver colored chip on it? Have you ever wondered how much personal information maybe on that chip? The author discusses all of these things and much more. If you don't like being tracked and want to learn how to become invisible, the author tells what to look for and how to harden your personal security in an effort to achieving that goal. In the end, however, he warns that becoming invisible is a very difficult task.I highly recommend this book.

In two places you are referred to later chapters where the tool for spoofing the MAC address is never actually identified - so Google it! The book identifies and describes a lot of useful tools and techniques. I originally gave this a 4 - I had hoped to learn more from it. But I've just re-read it and pushed my rating from a 4 up to a 5 and wish I could give it a 6! I've been in security for quite a while and still learned a thing or two. When's the last time you enjoyed reading resource material? Great coverage of a great topic.

I'm a 20 year IT sys admin and this book was awesome. Much of this stuff I knew already but Kevin puts it together like nobody else can; moreover, he puts it together so anyone can understand.It's not just a book about how to become invisible to today's technology grid, it's the Bible of how you are being screwed and used by what you probably don't understand about your favorite gadget, app or appliance.I don't care if you don't know the difference between Outlook or AOL, you need to get this book and finish it. It might very well be the most important book you read in the next five years.
