Great stories in what amounts to be an infomercial. It's doesn't really lay out concrete steps to follow through with very well.

Warning: this book is about how and why schools should incorporate the seven habits of highly effective people. It pretty much assumes you already know what they are and what they mean. If you don't, get the original.

Good book but has A LOT of fluff in it. Most of the book he spends talking about how great the programs are at different schools, which is interesting to know, but offers no value. After one or two stories it's like, "all right, I get it, it's a great program, now tell ME how I can replicate it," but then he goes on and on and on with more and more stories not telling you anything. Then, finally, towards the end,he starts to get into some talk that is helpful but it's very short lived. I'm a big fan of Mr. Covey's work, but this isn't one of his best. Better to read The 7 habits of highly effective families than this book.

Ample examples that touch upon how the 7 habits may work, would like to see in depth analysis or case studies on how setbacks were overcome, illustration on how to tackle setbacks and resistance would be invaluable information for someone like me who wishes to make things better for the children but stumbles from time to time facing setbacks

I've been a huge fan of Rachel for years and an even bigger fan of Swedish culture since childhood. I got the printed copy of this book from Amazon UK. This book is another culinary journey that is similar to her earlier books on French cooking. It's not an entire compilation of Sweden but does have certain dishes that are unique to certain regions.So far, I've only made two recipes. I made a variation of the Västerbotten pie (sort of like a cheese quiche with onion and chanterelle mushrooms) with mature cheddar because the västerbotten (a Swedish cheese) was impossible to locate. It's a good recipe and wasn't difficult to make. The roasted butternut squash waffles sounded unusual but were actually pretty good. The only con I found was that the squash makes the waffles a bit squishy. They weren't crispy waffles but it was an interesting take on waffles. The recipe uses fresh butternut squash (that is roasted and then pureed) and doesn't give instructions on a canned equivalent. I used canned squash and the recipe was fine.There are 4 sections in the book for each season. The layout is more user friendly because I think it's easier to cook based on what's in season. The book is pretty salad heavy. There are lots of "bun" recipes (cardamon buns, black pudding, apple and cheese, St. Lucia etc.) . Of course, there's a recipe or two for meatballs. Unlike her previous books, there are quite a lot of vegetarian and gluten free recipes. I am not the latter but do appreciate meat free dishes once in awhile. My only complaint so far is that I would have liked a source list. The book doesn't call for many ingredients that would be difficult to find (maybe except for Swedish caviar, västerbotten or knäckebröd, a type of cracker) but I wanted to have some recommendations of what to buy online since I don't live in Sweden.I think it's too early to tell how high this cookbook will rank on my list of Rachel's books ("The Little Paris Kitchen" remains my favorite out of all 6 of her books.) but I do think it's a good intro to Swedish food for an English-speaking audience. The writing style feels very warm and personal with insights into her home life in Stockholm and new family. I think this book is less commercial than her last cookbook and it lacks her classic illustrations so if you're a fan like me you'll be missing those.EDIT NOVEMBER 2018: I have upgrade my original review from 4 stars to 5 after trying a few more recipes. I made the plum tosca cake (like an upside down cake with toasted nuts on top) and coconut macaroons with melted dark chocolate that were both very easy. I don't think the recipes I've tried are complicated for new cooks and most of the ingredients are pretty easy to find.

This Revised Edition (also called 3.5) of one-third of the Dungeons & Dragons trinity of core rulebooks (the other two being The Dungeon Master's Guide and The Monster Manual) contains errata, rules updates, and outright changes to the already-published Third Edition rules. The majority of changes are made in a quest for the holy grail of game rules: balance. To prevent boredom and enable creative choices, no single ability, spell, character class, or weapon should have an overwhelming advantage over another. So what has changed? The spells Harm, Heal, and Haste have been toned down. Other spells have been adjusted or renamed. Weapons are classified by the Size of the intended wielder, not the size of the individual weapons. A noteworthy effect of this new weapon size system is that Small characters can wield small-size greatswords, longswords, longspears (with reach), and other two-handed weapons. Classes have been tweaked. Bards and rangers received the most changes. New feats have been added (some original, some from the builder books), and some feats have been altered (a Power Attack now gives double benefit for two-handed weapons). Redundant skills have been rolled into one (such as sense motive and read lips) while others have been renamed (such as "wilderness lore" becoming "survival"). Skill synergies have been expanded and knowledge skills now include appropriate monster lore. In addition to outright rules changes and tweaks, much of the core rule content has been clarified and updated with 3E errata. The combat section, in particular, is organized much better. Even the dreaded grapple rules are now relatively clear. A much-appreciated import from the D&D Miniatures game are new and simple rules for cover and line of sight, as well as clear photographic illustrations of the concepts of facing, attacks of opportunity, and reach. All in all, 3.5 is a welcome update. The typographical errors are forgivable, given the extent of the update. The new options available to players (in the form of new class features and feats) make the play experience more fun. This is the Player's Handbook for D&D 3.5. It is the first book you will open when getting into the system, and the one you will rely on the most. It lays out the basics and the mechanics of the game, and gives you a source to refer to for just about any need. With this tome, you will be able to create a fictional character, to take part in an epic adventure with your friends or family.There are hundreds of D&D books and websites out there, all teeming with useful information, but this book remains the go-to for a lot of basic information. Need to quickly look up the price of a horse-drawn cart? It's there. How about the base stats for someone of the elf race? It's there, too. Wizard class information? Feats? Rules on grappling? All there.It's also a very nice book to have a physical copy of, and each person's handbook takes on a life of its own, from sticky notes inserted in the pages, to scribblings and highlights in the pages. The book is filled with excellent information, examples, and wonderful illustrations. The book is of a somewhat heavy construction, so it'll last for years if treated right.Inside this book's pages are hours of enjoyment and fun for all ages. However, 3.5 is one of the more difficult versions to learn, but don't let that intimidate you. It takes quite a while to learn everything, and in the time it takes, you will be playing part of countless adventures, to where you won't even realize how much you've learned!All in all, I would recommend this to both new and seasoned players alike. It is an excellent addition to any gamer's rulebook collection.

I'm giving it 5 stars because of the quality of the book I got (used). It looks like it's never even been read; though it had the previous owner's name inside the cover.The reason that I bought this (and that I want to give it five stars) is that this was the last "good" version of D&D. In 4.0, the entire game was refactored and all the things that were fun were removed from the game. For example, it's all about combat mechanics and pushing the opponent into position for others to use their spells/abilities. Every class is so balanced that it doesn't matter which one you are, they're all the same... nothing interesting about any of them anymore.In 4.0, the D&D team decided to remove all the concepts of non-combat spells for magic users, so that there are no more of the really cool spells. Also, there are specific moves that you're allowed to do for each class; that makes it feel like a video game: you push the button and the move happens and you see what the damage is. There is no more imagination to try to think up your own moves and assess the damage. The 4.0 game is designed on the assumption that the DM is five years old and won't let you do anything that can be read from the rules verbatim. Terrible compromise in my opinion, which takes away much of the fun.Next, they got rid of many of the classic classes and races and replaced with bizarre ones that take the game in a whole new direction. DISCLAIMER: I only have the first three core books for 4.0, and I'm aware that they came out with many more to fill in the blanks, but seriously, do you want to have to buy all those books just to version up one step from 3.5 to 4.0? Also those books have GIGANTIC font and whitespace issues, so you're really not getting what you should out of them.OK, enough of this rant and bash on 4.0, this is a review of the 3.5 book. It's nothing short of stellar. The combat rules and ability rules are concise and full-featured. There is plenty of room for expansion by the DM to cover all the scenarios, and there are few loop-holes for the characters to exploit. The book itself is about 50% spells, so the rich fantasy capabilities are still in this version, and the weapons and fighting rules are thoroughly explained. Yes, this version (3.5) is more complicated than the new one (4.0), but you can always "dumb it down" to speed things up if you need to.Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this version and would recommend it to anyone out there upgrading from the previous versions, or anyone that is disillusioned with the new 4.0 limitations and wants to downgrade to something that still captures the essence of D&D.

I just recently began to play tabletop RPGs, and this is one of the first ones I tried. I thought it was going to be difficult, but as you play with more experienced people you begin to figure out the rules with ease. When played with a great group, this is one of the most enjoyable times you will have. Creating characters, playing as them, and exploring the world in your own way is grand. If you've never played D&D, I recommend 3.5 (or 5e) as a starter. It's an absolute blast.

The book sent to me was not v3.5 but 3.0. Does not match item description nor is what I paid for. Highly disappointed and a waist of my time as my set is still incomplete.

Absolutely essential for players and DM's for any 3.5 edition campaign. As one of the Core 3 (others being the Dungeon Master's Guide 3.5 and Monster Manual 3.5), it is an exhaustive resource detailing the Core Classes (such as Rogue, Fighter, Cleric, and Wizard, among others), base skills, round action breakdown, 3rd edition spell system, and base Core spells for divine and arcane. Only reason I'm writing this review at all is that my original copy after 15 years finally fell out from the binding and I had to get a replacement. Yes, if you enjoy 3rd edition, you will use it that much.

This is the best system for role playing in the fantasy genre yet devised. I think this needs to be stated with the new Pathfinder game system mod coming out. This is easily understood and played, yet is complex enough to allow for interesting play and has infinite house rule potential. There have been a couple of attempts to "upgrade" this system by making it "simpler", but so far, these attempts have done nothing but increase the complexity by decreasing the intuitiveness of the rules and widen the appeal to those interested in playing a video game on the table top. I'm sure that everything I said has been said a million times, and has been said about this book. But the truth is, if you have a negative experience with a game system, you need to examine the group you play with, not the rules.

I dislike books that contain explicit descriptions of rape and murdering or snuffing of women. This novel goes into great detail about the humiliation and shock of a woman who is stripped and gang raped by six men. Afterward her throat is slit and this is all recorded on video to sell. Guido's teenage daughter comes into possesion of the film and views it. She is shocked but gets over it unrealistically quickly to facilitate the pace of the novel. The lawyer and wealthy nen who comisioned the film for profit are depicted as enjoying the woman's humiliation and death. The book tries to expose the treatment of sex trafficked women but provides voyeuristic detail . This reader was deeply shocked with disturbed breathing and emotional distress. While the issue needs to be discussed there is no need to produce detail drawing the reader into the 'experience.'

Leon continues to write so well that the story seems to flow spontaneously from some cosmic source of all stories. I gave the book the rating not because it was fun to read, but because it deals fairly with gritty, ugly reality. It romanticizes nothing. It does not preach. There is an element of journalism here. She quotes facts and numbers of human trafficking, but always as Brunetti's doing his job and doing it well. (With help from Signorina Elettra and friends.) The thing that sets Leon as an author and the series apart from average fiction is her characters and their ways of living with the results of an increasingly corrupt and inhumane society.I questioned the use of "Judgment" in the title because characters never encounter the judicial branch . In this book, judgment is handed down surely, swiftly, and fatally. It is the concept of justice that is questionable here. As in life.

Though she has lived in Venice for more than a quarter-century, Donna Leon has insisted that the Commissario Brunetti series of detective novels she sets in Venice not be translated from English into Italian. There’s no mystery here. Leon’s picture of Italian society is merciless.In Death and Judgment, the fourth in her Commissario Brunetti series, Leon writes, “villains ruled the land. All, or what seemed like all, of the major political figures who had ruled the country since Brunetti was a child had been named in accusation, named again on different charges, and had even begun to name one another, and yet not one of them had been tried and sentenced, though the coffers of the state had been sucked dry.”Again: Brunetti “often thought that the only safe procedure a person could undergo at the Ospedale Civile was an autopsy. It was the only time a patient ran no risk.”Invariably, Brunetti is forced to work around the orders of his boss, Vice-Questore Patta, whose overriding concern is that the Commissario not jeopardize the favor he enjoys from the local elite. A typical admonition from Patta runs along these lines: “‘Brunetti, don’t go stirring up trouble with this.'”Despite Brunetti’s brilliant detective work, the end result of his investigations all too frequently is a cover-up, leaving the Commissario despondent. “Brunetti knew this mood and almost feared it, this recurring certainty of the futility of everything he did. Why bother to put the boy who broke into a house in jail when the man who stole billions from the health system is named ambassador to the country to which he had been sending the money for years?”As the long-suffering Brunetti notes in a conversation with his secret collaborator, Vice-Questore Patta’s extremely competent secretary, “‘For fifty years, ever since the end of the war, all we’ve ever been is lied to. By the government, the church, the political parties, by industry and business and the military.’“‘And the police?’ she asked.“‘Yes,’ he agreed with no hesitation whatsoever, ‘and the police.'”Is this an accurate picture of Italy today? I haven’t spent enough time in the country or traveled widely enough there to be able to answer the question. Perhaps it’s relevant that Death and Judgment, published in 1995, was only the fourth book in the now 25-strong Commissario Brunetti series. But, other than the switch from the lire to the euro, I suspect that things haven’t changed that much in Italy in the last 20 years. Certainly, the recurring news reports about Italy’s nonstop political game of musical chairs isn’t encouraging.It may be no exaggeration to say that Death and Judgment, like the other novels I’ve read in the Commissario Brunetti series, is a work of social commentary as well as a murder mystery. Like many of her contemporaries, Donna Leon demonstrates a mastery of sociology as well as skill in crafting a suspenseful novel.

This fourth book in the Brunetti series is somewhat darker than the first three: Venice is more corrupt and lawless while Guido, himself, is less admirable as he lies to those he questions, involves his 14-year-old daughter in spying for him, and uses illegal means to obtain phone information he needs. The book leaves one with a bad taste in the mouth. There are a few pages that describe violence and are disturbing. Coincidence plays too large a role -- as in the video that happens to be given to Chiara, the truck accident Paola just happens to recall, and the fact that Pata's secretary's sister, a doctor, just happens to have treated the murdered man's wife and daughter. When Brunetti needs information, he just happens to have acquaintances in foreign countries or locally who owe him favors and happen to provide just the information he needs as he puts the puzzle of the three murders together. The killer's motive ultimately doesn't make sense and isn't credible. The book held my interest and was very absorbing until the unsatisfying end. The reader is left with a helpless feeling that corruption triumphs and the little man is tilting at windmills to try to stop it in even a single instance. The rich and powerful always come out ahead.

An early but intriguing story by Donna Leon that bares the issues of human trafficking and prostitution and through the story shares how those who are involves slowly lose their humanity ... usually overtly but sometimes by becoming silent and letting it happen.A successful lawyer gets on train to return home and toward the end of the journey is found shot to death; another, supposedly committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning; and a third, again, shot to death. Commissary Brunetti knows in his gut that they are related and slowly builds up the threads connecting each man to the other and to a secret undertaking with attachments across countries and from the highest levels of Italian government. Before it is over, Brunetti and his family will have seen the cost and the perniciousness of such crimes.
