Though I have read a fair number of LaTeX books, some of which are superb, I think that this relatively short book by the original author of LaTeX is still the most essential reference (and the first two chapters are still the best "getting started" guide). If you are new to LaTeX this is definitely the place to start, but it has much to offer long-time users, as well.One of the benefits of writing documents in LaTeX (and directly in TeX) is that the investment in learning the tool pays off across decades. My copy has a copyright date of 1994 and a printing date of 1996, and is still entirely relevant in 2017.For very casual users of LaTeX, this book combined with the excellent documentation that comes with LaTeX itself may be all that you ever need to use the system comfortably. However, I suspect most users would want to supplement that material with The LaTeX Companion by Mittelback and Goossens (isbn: 0201362996) and The Guide to LaTeX by Kipka and Daly (isbn: 0-321-17385-6).

I purchased a used copy of this book from Thriftbooks at about $ 6 which is far lower than the price of a new book. The book was delivered in 3-4 days, and it was in an EXCELLENT condition. No torn pages, no scribbles nothing.This is the 1st time I have purchased a used book and am very pleased with this experience. It's a very good optionto buy such books which don't age with editions, at a very reasonable price.Skimmed thru the contents, and like all other reviews, this is certainly a good book, covering lots of usefulmaterial about Latex. I also purchased a used copy of LaTeX Companion by Mittelbach & Goossens (from anothersource), and that too came in a very good condition.Lamport's book is, of course, a classic, like K&R's book on C. I learnt a lot just reading through (as this book suggests)going thru chaps 2 & 3. I can't wait to get back to my LaTeX Project.Keep up this exchange of good quality used books thru Amazon! I started using LaTeX (and TeX) over 15 years ago. I was dissatisfied with the way that Word handled equations (it didn't then) and sought software that would typeset my technical text and mathematics well. A friend and colleague introduced me to LaTeX. I bought a copy of Lamport's book, a PC port of the software, and started using LaTeX to set my work.I've been using LaTeX ever since. I use it for everything I write, with the exception of a few works that require me to use Word, either because my colleagues use it or the research sponsor requires it. Recently, one of my principal research sponsors began accepting PDF format reports, so I may escape one more instance of using Word. That pleases me. But, I digress.LaTeX is a set of macros (programs) that implement a variety of styles in the TeX language. Use of LaTeX is through a number of mark-up commands (in the same fashion that web documents are set with HTML mark-up) that are applied to textual elements of a document. Most of your LaTeX documents comprise your text. A small amount of text will be allocated to LaTeX mark-up.This book provides the necessary instruction for learning to use LaTeX. It is written for technical users, but not computer experts. That is, Lamport expects the users of the software to have a technical background because that's the goal of the software -- to set technical documents. But he doesn't expect the reader to be a computer expert.The book is manageable in length too. It is not so long as to require multiple sittings to work through it. Once familiar with the content, it is fairly easy to find what you are looking for in the text. The index is complete and useful. When using Lamport, I'm reminded of Kernighan and Ritchie (The C Programming Language) -- Lamport has a similar kind of easy flow to the text.While the material is not easy, Lamport's book does a good job of conveying use of a highly technical piece of software in a readable fashion. If you are going to use LaTeX, you will want a copy of this book. You will also want a copy of Mittelbach and others LaTeX Companion (2nd edition) to help use the plethora of add-on packages available for LaTeX.So, download a install of TeX (and LaTeX -- Google the TeX User's Group) for your computer, buy a copy of Lamport (and Mittelbach and others), read through Lamport, and start playing with LaTeX. If you write technical documents that require mathematics, you'll find LaTeX very useful. When you find yourself writing longer documents, the ability to automatically generate tables of contents, lists of figures and tables, bibliographies, and indices will make the software all the more valuable and the time invested learning to use it well-spent.Welcome to the world of LaTeX. So when I first purchased this item this book was missing pages 17-48. Amazon was kind enough to respond by email within 12 hours and create a one day shipping order to replace the book. When I got the new book it had pages 17-48 twice! Now this could be a low probabilistic coincidence or the factory that manufactured the set of books Amazon received had a problem with when assembling the book. Either way, having the pages twice is better than having them zero times.As far as the book goes it seems like a fairly well written book (although I must admit I have not read much into it). I have seen many of the complains people have written and I personally think they purchased the wrong book. This seems like a very nice introductory text for those who have no experience (or very little) with LaTeX. If you're looking for a more in depth coverage - obviously this is not the text you're looking for. You get what you pay for.

This is still the best book to introduce one to LaTeX. My PhD adviser recommended it some months ago. He was correct that it is the best introduction to the perfection that is typesetting with LaTeX. Why bother with Microsoft or Open Office when you can make perfect documents or presentations?

This is a very interesting book if you want to make your own Chinese food in a wok. It gives some history on Chinese food in America and how it's different to what you find in China. The recipes in the book sound wonderful. Unfortunately, I don't own a wok at this time. So I'll have to wait to try any of them. But reading through them, they didn't seem too hard to achieve. If you have a wok, this would be a good cookbook to add to your collection.I received this book for free for my review.

I had not realized before buying this that the content was focused on healthy versions of American Chinese food. What a pleasant surprise! I am new to Wok cooking and this book has been great explaining the different kinds of Wok's, where to buy asian spices and what substitutes to make if you can't find specific items at the grocery store (for example they mention using Mexican Red Chilies if you cannot find Chinese Red Chilies)So far we've made General Tso's Chicken and Dan Dan Noodles. Both of them have been hits with the family. If your new to Wok cooking or want a healthy version of your favorite take-out. This is your book!

This Christmas I received a wok. Cooking is an absolute passion of mine, and I was so excited to get a traditional style carbon steel wok.Only, I had only one or two recipes in my arsenal, certainly nothing worth noting. I needed more and I searched amazon for a cookbook that had authentic style recipes that would still be affordable. I landed on this one.It has some authentic style recipes, healthier versions of well known "Chinese" recipes, along with the basics like plain rice. It also had fun stories on how certain well known recipes came about and how authentic they actually are.I'm lucky to live near a larger city where I have access to grocery stores dedicated to authentic cuisines from every end of the globe, but this book is great because it also breaks it down to ingredients everyone has access to. My family now eats stir fry once a week and I'm happy knowing how much cheaper and healthier it is than take out. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make delicious stir fry.

This book has all your wok favorites from Dan Dan Noodles to General Tso's Chicken to Lemon Chicken to Hoisin Chicken. It even has your traditional soups like Wonton Soup and Egg Drop soup. Newer favorites like Pineapple Fried Rice are also listed. All of the recipes are budget friendly which is why I love Asian wok food. Most of it is gluten free also which seems to be a wonderful plus these days.The book doesn't fall short of it's title The Essential Wok Cookbook. I know it is a handy little favorite now in our kitchen. We just pop up the table and bring out the wok. One dish we are planning to try next is the Hot and Sour Vegetable Soup. We love Hot and Sour soup but, I can be kind of picky so I hope this lives up to my standards and I am able to play with it to get the perfect soup.I would highly recommend this book if you would like to learn how to make Asian food as it a well written front log of information on products.

I am going to get the bad news out of the way first....it's only one sentence anyway: There were not enough pictures. I don't own a Wok and am not real sure I will get one (simply due to storage space) but I WILL be trying SEVERAL of these recipes! My husband and I love Chinese food and this book is full of old time favorites as well as some unfamiliar but tasty sounding ones! Not only do the recipes include the serving size, prep/cook times, gluten status where applicable, but some actually say "Under $10" although I'm not sure how confident I would be in putting that in print. ;) Most recipes also include a tip which might tell you what ingredients could be swapped out for each other, or the different ways that it could be prepared! The book begins with "the basics" and explains the advantages to preparing at home versus take out (YOU can control how healthy and the cost!) but my very favorite sections were the "Origin Stories"! Who knew that Fortune Cookies aren't even made, served or eaten in China! It's purely an American tradition! The more I think about it, I believe I would use a Wok more often than I use my Quesadilla maker! If you love Asian food you need this cookbook!

Great for the beginner or more experienced cook, this book, which in got in exchange for my honesty opinion, hits the spot for many tastes! I got this book along with a new wok so I was excited to get started again! I love how the book gives you some background and history and illustrations to show you how to do things like wrap an egg roll or wonton, and explains step by step how to cook some if your favorite meals and how to prepare your wok right from the beginning to really use it to the best of its abilities. I love the hot and sour soup recipe and the lighter egg foo young recipe and can't wait to try the salt and pepper squid and the general tso's chicken, which is a take out fave of mine I'd love to do at home! So many pages and an easy read, great direction and a new kitchen essential! Well recommended!

This book is okay but has few photos of dishes and those that are included are not labelled. I would not buy this again.

I was pleasantly surprised while reading through this cookbook. I honestly expected all of the recipes to contain a lot of ingredients I didn't have on hand, but that wasn't the case. There are some things I had to go out to purchase, but luckily my supermarket has a very well stocked section of foods from all around the world. I have only been able to try out one recipe so far (Chicken Chow Main), but other than the oyster sauce I had everything I needed in my pantry. I'll definitely be getting more use out of this cookbook and now have no reason to not use my wok. I'm eager to try some of the vegetarian recipes so I have something other than another boring eggplant parm when my friends require meatless options. I did receive this cookbook in exchange for my review, but my opinions are my own.

About the Author

R. A. MONTGOMERY attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston-Northampton School and Williams College where he graduated in 1958. He pursued graduate studies in Religion and Economics at Yale and NYU. Cute read for the early chapter book stage! My second grader has been using this for reading assignments and it has been perfect for his grade level. I’d say he is an average to above average reader for anyone trying to gauge if this is appropriate for your child. He doesn’t love to read but hasn’t whined about this book. The storylines have also been appropriate for the 6-8 year old range as well.

I love the ability to choose and learn from the choices. My boy likes the story(s). I thought that in some scenarios in the book after making what seemed liked a poor decision the outcome was too positive. I like kids to have fun with their stories but I like them to see that bad decisions lead to unwanted outcomes. I think this author missed an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson.

My kiddos love it. 1st grader and 3rd grader. I actually took the book in as a guest reader to their classes and the classes loved choosing the story I read to them. (majority ruled the path) I read the book 2 times so they could see a different ending. The students and teachers both wanted to know where I got the book.

My 5 year old son loves this book. The endings to the stories are very abrupt, but he doesn't seem to mind.

I have 2 daughters, 10 and 7. My 10 year old is dyslexic and reading is a struggle for her. We got a CYOA book for her from a used book store and she fell in love. She reads a little bit of it nearly everyday and it's so great to see her excited about reading. Our 7 year old is a born reader and has always loved books, but the CYOA we bought the older girl is still a little advanced for the young one. This CYOA, however, is perfect for her level and she loves reading it as well!

I bought this for my daughter to introduce her to the Choose Your Own Adventure style of books. This was a very good book with a fun and interesting storyline. My daughter really enjoyed it and it helped to get her interested in reading on her own, which I was very pleased about. I always enjoyed this type of book as a kid myself, and I'm so glad to see that they are still being written today.

When I was a little girl we used to read these wide eyed until we reach the ending! As I was reading the excellent Volume 2 of "The Walking Dead," I realized that this book is not about zombies. Sure, zombies show up, but the story is about something deeper. It's about ordinary people, and relationships, and what desires truly lie in the heart of humankind.Story-wise, I thought that the most interesting question brought up was, "What is going on with the zombies?" The father at the farm thought that there was a chance that the zombies might one day suddenly become cured by themselves. I loved the idea that somebody was speaking up and saying that the zombies shouldn't be killed because they are real people and the source of the problem was still unknown. This is a departure from most zombie stories in which the goal is to kill the zombies to ensure your own survival.

Like many readers, I've been an on again/off again comicbook fan for many years... In the last couple of years (since the year 2000) I've returned to the fold, this time taking advantage of the many top-quality graphic novels out there, and Robert Kirkman's "Walking Dead" was one of the titles most frequently recommended to me since I started this reading spree. It lives up to the hype.I just finished reading books 1-4, which collect the first twenty-four issues of the comic, and man, I can't wait for book #5 to come out. The series tells the story of a guy named Rick, a small-town cop and self-described Barney Fife who wakes up from a hospital stay to find the world changed around him -- it's zombie time, but zombie time with twist. The twist is that, unlike all the movies and TV shows we've all seen, "The Walking Dead" has a much longer, open-ended story arc -- Kirkman and co. don't have to wrap things up in a tidy, two-hour package, so there is space for the story to unfold at its own pace, with character development that's more prolonged and in-depth than the usual zombie flick allows. By the end of Book 4, the crisis has lasted about a year and Rick and his band of survivors are about twelve strong, having lost about an equal number of family and friends over the course of the story. It's a taut, grim, reflective plot line that keeps your interest and compels you to read. I, for one, hope this isn't just another one of those neat B&W comix that kind of fizzle out, but rather that Kirkman really gets the chance to do what he says he wants to do, and follow Rick's saga as far as he can. I love the comic series, but this book has been wet. The pages are wrinkled and the back cover is misshaped. Last few pages of the book were stuck together. I didnt see anything on the item description that stated it was a used book. It isnt worth the trouble to send it back. But not a good purchase.

I hopped on The Walking Dead band wagon after the show became popular, so I purchased this volume to catch up on missed issues. If you like the series, this is a must have item. That said, I caution you if you want to order this book--or likely any comic--through Amazon Prime. I bought this book with several other items, one of which was quite large, but all my purchases were shipped in the same box. The comic was free to move around within the box so by the time it arrived, the book was bent and one page was ripped from banging into the other contents of the box. If you're a Prime customer, I suggest either purchasing this item by itself, or only with other books, so the item is less likely to be damaged in shipping.

This volume picks up after the events of Volume 1: Days Gone Bye. After the death of Shane, Rick Grimes and the rest of the survivors leave Atlanta and travel across many miles of hostile territory seeking a safer home. The group picks up new members and loses old ones as they attempt to survive the brutal winter. The group eventually finds shelter at a small farm, though it is discovered that Hershel Greene, the owner of the farm, and his family are keeping a dark secret.

I am finally reading Walking Dead comics! I’ve been watching the show since the second season (and watched the first season when they had a marathon) It’s great to see the difference between the comic and the tv show.

As with many creative works The Walking Dead allows us to question things. All of the what ifs regarding our priorities, motivations, concerns, breaking points, etc... can be explored and pondered, without violating any ethical constraints of human experiment, in the safety of our home in our favorite reading spot.On a practical note the book does contain some violent images, implied sex (everything is covered by blankets, the partner, etc..), and gratuitous profanity. Because of the black and white nature of the artwork the more visceral images are less graphic than they would be if they were in color.

The Walking Dead is a very mature story that takes a look at topics ignored by many of the other examples of the Zombie Survival Fiction genre. It shows how emotion leads to action in ways that can shock modern readers' sense of stability. It provides an interesting commentary on how thin the veneer of civilization is despite all attempts by the characters to cling to it. It lets the reader experience the loss of structure and provokes thoughts of "what would I do" beyond the typical "raid the gun store, grocery store and head for a cabin in the woods" mentality we've seen before.The entire series thus far (1-7) has been top notch and a real example of how graphic novels can tackle stories that would take a 600 page novel to cover in detail.

I bought this book to read with my 8yo daughter. She paged through it a bit before we started, I thought nothing of it. A few days later at the table she said something about "watching her weight." We were floored. We don't talk like that and have no body hang ups. We addressed it but were really concerned about the source.Today we started reading it. The introduction immediately talked about girls being awkward, confused, embarrassed, and "struggling to find words" to talk about their bodies. WHAT? Are you kidding me? She was none of those things but thanks for planting that in her mind. We stopped reading and I told her it probably wasn't the right book for us. After she went to bed I turned to the chapter titled "Belly Zone." Now we see exactly where she got the idea that she should start to "worry abut her weight." More gems on the page? fad diets, "normal" weight, "where's your waist?," and talking to your doctor about going on a diet.This book is supposed to be for 8+. Shameful garbage. I am so beyond angry.

I bought this for my daughter who currently is seven with the thought I would have it stored away until I felt like she was ready to start talking in more detail about puberty, maybe sometime in the next year or when she is eight. I developed on the earlier side, as did my mother, so I am anticipating she may start pre-puberty in the next year or so. I am so glad I decided to read through the book before showing it to her because I have decided to return it and look for something else. As another reviewer mentioned, this book has a lot of content that could actually CAUSE insecurities about her body rather than prevent them.What I like about the book:It is simply written and easy for a younger girl to understand. It talks about puberty in a mostly positive way. It has fun illustrations that would appeal to my daughter and does talk about all bodies being different and so on, BUT…What I DON’T like about the book:As of now my daughter has a very positive self/body image. She is very comfortable in the skin she is in. From my observations, most girls in the target age of this book, 8-11, haven’t quite gotten the message yet that they should be looking critically at their own bodies or judge others for how they look. If they read this book, though, they WILL be exposed to these concepts. While my daughter does have a positive self-image at the moment and we have worked hard to cultivate that, I also know (and remember) how fragile that can be at the tween stage and the power of suggestion is huge at this age.Here are some examples:My daughter has a beautiful speckling of freckles across her nose. Most people around her have commented that they love them. SHE loves them. She said to me a few months ago that she wished she had MORE freckles. In this book, on page 36: “I have freckles. I hate them and wish I could get some lotion that would make my freckles go away. I need help!” While she loves her freckles, I could see reading this she may start to question how she feels about them. I could imagine her thinking, “Wait, are freckles considered to be ugly?”Page 50-51, three questions are about girls’ insecurities of having a flat chest, then this one: “I have bigger boobs than all of my friends. Because of this, my friends are embarrassed to be around me because they think I’m very ugly and fat. I used to be very popular, but now I find myself dorky and lonely.” Yikes! Really?? I developed breasts earlier than my friends and was definitely insecure about them, wearing large shirts, etc., but NEVER did I ever think my friends wouldn’t like me because of them. The message that people may not like you because of anything having to do with your physical appearance is horrible. I know it is rampant in our culture, but I really would like to keep my young daughter from being exposed to this idea as long as I can. I realize the book is trying to prevent these kinds of thoughts, but the question in itself may get girls wondering and thinking about these things, not to mention re-enforcing the message that if you are fat, you are unlikable.In the same vain, pages 62-63, titled Body Talk, all four questions from girls are about how other girls are thinner; how to stay thin; how to get thinner; and comparing your own body to your friends'. Talk about re-enforcing the idea that thin is ideal! I know the answers talk about all bodies being different and not to compare yourself, but these questions themselves might get our daughters thinking about whether they are thin enough and that it is normal to compare their bodies to their friends'. Yes, I realize she will face these issues at some point. I just feel there is no need to get these thoughts going at such an early age.This is getting so long, but just know there are other parts in the book talking about comparing yourself to others physically; calling someone pizza face because of acne; insecurities if you haven’t gotten your period yet and are not considered a “woman” like your friends, etc. Again, I know that these are presented as questions and the book is telling the girls not to do those things or feel these ways, but the power of suggestion is so strong.I wish there was a simple book about bodily changes/puberty which I could read to an eight year old girl without going in to explicit details about sex. This book would be much better if it just stuck to the facts about physical changes during puberty, how to take care of yourself, etc. and left out the question/answer section. The questions seem more appropriate for the second book for older girls (if even), not the target age of this book. I saw one recommendation in another review for "Reaching for the Moon," by Lucy H. Pearce. I will try that and then leave an update here.

The book addresses many feelings of insecurity like, "It's tempting to compare yourself to the girls you see on TV...I just got glasses. I was worried everybody would make fun of me...I have freckles. I hate them...People say I'm thin, but I think I need to lose about 15 pounds...Do you feel left out because everyone except you is getting a bra?" My daughter doesn't seem to to have these issues and I don't want to plant all of these insecurities in her head. I will be searching for a book that gives the facts and doesn't assume that every child will feel shame and embarrassment while growing up.

I have never written a review before but feel compelled to warn parents that this book could make your daughter start having confidence issues. The first page talks about how you may be embarrassed by parts of your body (my daughter is not so why introduce that idea at the ripe old age of 9?). Then on the page about wearing glasses (which my daughter does proudly and considers fashionable) it talks about how you may feel like a dork or people might make fun of you in your glasses. No thanks. She's not reading this book and now I'm searching for one that provides this type of information in a more positive manner.
