Library book. No purchase. I loved this book. I never thought about the juxtaposition of ACD the author and Sherlock Holmes, the character. So much of what Holmes was was also ACD. Fantastic insight into heinous crimes in the early 20th century. Most England, but a few in the USA. ACD's dismay @ the cavalier attitudes by many in the law enforcement community @ that time was well justified. There were a goodly number of real life Lestrades in Scotland Yard and other English rural police forces. I had read another book about this same topic a few mos. ago. Same complain. Very sloppy police investigative work. I do recall Alfred Hitchcock also having the same opinion of law enforcement. I must say, I do avoid the police as much as I can. Maybe I also suffer from a similar doubt as to the professional capabilities of our local sleuths? Hope none read this or guess my identity. Great book. Very interesting. Exceedingly interesting cases and insight into the processes used by ACD to cast doubt on those who were seemingly framed. Makes me want to watch some more S. Holmes vids this winter before the weather improves. Well worth the time for folks, like me, who like these kinds of true crime dramas.

I don't think I have ever read a book that bounced around in time as much as this one. It seemed like every paragraph had a year mentioned, and without them, the reader would be completely confused. The explanations of the two major cases (George Edalji and Oscar Slater) seem to go on forever with minute and repeated details. It was fascinating to learn of the many real cases Doyle took an interest in because of his famous creation, as well as, to learn more about his other writings and especially his fascination with spiritualism and contacting the dead.

This is a very interesting look at Conan Doyle and his creation, Sherlock Holmes. Many people thought they were the same person and also thought Doyle was a detective. As it happened several very fascinating cases found their way to Doyle and he solved them in very Sherlock Holmes style. This books describe several of these cases and his efforts to get justice for people wrongly accused. The book also describes his interest in spiritualist matters which caused some to question his sanity. There is also very interesting insight into his often rocky relationship to Harry Houdini, which was detailed in another very enjoyable book by Mr. Sandford called Masters of Mystery: The Strange Friendship of Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini.
