Note: Spoiler Alert:I was moved by this book. I suspect Tropper's goal was to write a novel about the power of impending death and of truth. I believe he succeeded. Silver, the protagonist, is a train wreck of a man. He is divorced, living in an apartment house with a group of other unhappy divorced men and is wracked with guilt about his irresponsible behavior as a husband and father. He had a brief fling with fame as the drummer with a one-hit rock group and his drugs-sex-and rock and roll behavior was his undoing. He has no hopes for a better future. When he discovers he has a bad heart which needs immediate repair he decides to forego the surgery. Impending death frees him and he begins speaking the truth regardless of how much pain and devastation it causes for daughter, ex-wife and others. This truth, however, ultimately brings about powerful, positive change. I found Silver both fascinating and appealing. I suspect the author knows a bit about playing drums and this lent some additional authenticity to the book. Tropper's writing style reminded more than a little of Richard Russo's. It shows a similar patience, fluidity and honesty; although he is not as funny or as textured.

When beginning to read One Last Thing Before I Go, it is hard to not be somewhat skeptical as to what the book would encompass, but with all books, it is important to attempt to stay open minded. After reading the entire book, I can say that my original skepticism was well warranted. The novel, written by Jonathan Tropper (a middle aged white man), tells the story of Drew Silver (another middle aged white man), who has let his life fall into pieces around him. His constant need to remind himself and those around him that his life is pathetic becomes obnoxious once it is made clear that Silver has made practically no attempts to save his failed marriage or mend his once strong relationship with his daughter Casey. The conflict of the novel comes in the form of Silver’s self-ultimatum, when he chooses to not receive life saving heart surgery and instead wait to die. One particularly weak aspect of the book, which is abundantly discussed in Ron Charles’ review “Troppers ‘One Last Thing Before I Go’” in The Washington Post, is the tone of the writing, which switches between Silver’s self-pitying reflection and unrealistic small-talk that fills the pages of the novel, whether it be with Casey, his parents, or Jack and Oliver, two equally pitiful divorced men who Silver has befriended. When Casey comes back into Silver’s life to divulge the information that she is pregnant, since (as she tells him) she cares the least about letting him down, four pages are filled with quick back and forth “witty” comebacks thought up too quickly, followed by pages on pages reflecting on his and Casey’s pasts. After Silver refuses medical treatment, there are a countless number of flippant jokes about death thrown at or by Silver from all directions, including from his father, who, although he pushes for Silver to get the surgery, seems to only nudge. Last but not least, Silver is caught time after time spewing overly cheesy declarations of his love for others, such as with his ex-wife Denise, and acknowledgements of his wrongdoings, such as with Casey. Neither of these does he ever fail to do without an audience, whether it be Denise’s fiancé or an entire Bat Mitzvah party. A second but no less harmful issue in the novel is the lack of any round or developed  character other than Silver. Although Casey and Denise both are given chapters that shed light on their inner thoughts, Casey recollecting losing her virginity and Denise thinking over her past marriage, they still never form into much more than appendages of Silver, meant to display all that he has lost. Neither Jack, Oliver, Silver’s parents, Silver’s brother, Denise’s fiancé Rich, nor Silver’s strange and unfounded crush named Lily are expanded on at all, although many of them play varyingly important roles in Silver’s life. In agreement with Charles’ Washington Post review of the novel, there are surely good ways to write about an empty and haunted people. Books such as Madame Bovary touch on humans who have little meaning in their life, but comparing their eloquence and poignancy to the dry humor and empty characters of One Last Thing Before I Go is almost a cruel joke. Yes, there are undoubtedly humorous and heartwarming parts of the novel. Silver reminisces on past girlfriends and memories of childhood Casey with touching nostalgia and fondness. The playful banter between Silver and the other characters is pleasant and amusing, at least before it becomes overdone. But overall? If you are looking for a cliché and trite quick read with few ups and many downs, One Last Thing Before I Go may satisfy your appetite. Otherwise, the book may not be for you.

Having read the better-known "This Is Where I Leave You," I initially expected this book to be much the same, and in some ways, it is...Tropper has a thing about nebbishy fortysomething men who have destroyed their marriages through some combination of neglect and stupidity. "One Last Thing Before I Go," is a much subtler exploration of those themes, however. It's less laugh-out-loud funny, and more nuanced, though it still has Tropper's signature fantastically quotable lines and pitch-perfect, beautifully paced dialogue.The premise is simple enough: Drew Silver, a washed-up drummer from a band that had one major hit, lives at the ironically named "Versailles," a holding-ground for divorced men and other sad sacks. His ex is on the verge of a second marriage; he is estranged from his daughter. Into the middle of this comes a surprise medical emergency and the subsequent fallout.In less-skilled hands, this could easily have become another sappy verse to some three-chord song about living like you're dying, but this isn't that. It's more an exploration of what it means, in very real terms, to have nothing to live for. Highly recommended.

Well. I loved This Is Where I Leave You. This one, not so much.First, it was not nearly as funny. Second, the MC - inexplicably called Silver - was just not the lovable loser he was made out to be. And, the reader is beaten over the head with the lovable loser concept. Perhaps in an attempt to make it be true.Silver's daughter is pregnant, his ex-wife is getting married, and he discovers that he needs surgery, soon, or else he will die. So he decides, eh, I'm never going to be anything more than a lovable loser, guess I'll just go ahead and die. Never mind that his wonderful parents are totally distraught, never mind that his daughter appears to want him in her life, never mind any of it, the story must go on and the story is that Silver would just prefer to die. He knows what changes he'd need to make to have the life he'd like to have, I guess he just doesn't have the energy to make them. Ugh.The worst of it for me, though, was the quirky movie scene-ness of most of the book. I say, write a book, and if you're lucky enough that it's made into a movie, they can add the stopping-dead-on-the-highway-on-ramp scene, or the sing-your-one-hit-wonder-song-out-of-nowhere-at-some-kid's-bar-mitzvah scene later. Almost all of the scenes in the book felt like they were written to entice a movie producer. Or many of them. Just annoying. Did not love this book. At all.

One of my reading specialties is collections of letters and diaries. After reading this gorgeous collection I felt like Steinbeck had inadvertantly written his autobiography. I started it on vacation on the Monterey peninsula, and happened to stumble upon his former home in Pacific Grove, which made me even more enthusiastic. Continuing to read the collection on the way back east, I found myself slowing down to savor the letters more, and didn’t want it to end. Steinbeck clearly took a lot of care in writing his correspondence, and his great spirit is thereby revealed. The editing is masterful. Instead of distracting the reader with footnotes, whole explanatory paragraphs are inserted, sometimes even in the body of the letter, making for very smooth reading. For clarity, they’re indented, and not at all intrusive. Anyone reading Steinbeck would be well advised to get this. Since I’ve only read about five of his books, it will be an enhanced pleasure to read more. Bravo to Steinbeck’s widow and Robert Wallsten, the editors.

The life John Steinbeck led -- adventurer, writer, wanderer, philosopher-- is here immortalized in Steinbeck's own characteristic prose, unpretentious and true and with each sentence rationed with just as much wisdom and humor as it might bear.Comprised only of letters, and most of those one-sided, the whole coalesces into so much more - snippets and musings of war and injustice, weather and politics, friendships on the rise and wane, but mostly the letters speak of the mundanities of his daily life and struggles with art and love and raising his boys to be fine, decent men, hopeful that his own shortcomings would lie dormant in them.This book is about a man, IS the man, told by days through all the years of his life and labor. That and so openly sharing their deep love, respect and friendship for eachother.This is a timeless piece. One of the few books that I plan on returning to throughout my life. For I know that I will see and learn something new, with each reading.

Every few days, I read a few of Steinbeck's letters. Right now they tell -- more than any biography ever could -- of a driven, thoughtful, observant, optimistic, arrogant, fascinating young man. Thankfully, the letters are mostly presented "as is," in chronological order but with editorial comments limited to those that provide necessary context.

Enjoyed this close look and personal one of John Steinbeck. Book arrived in excellent condition and was just as advertised.

Choose your own adventure books are amazing and that in itself is why anyone should invest in any of the books. I read them as a kid (Im 40 now) and my kids adore reading them too. I didnt personally read this book, my daughter did (9 years old) and she loved it.

This is exactly what I remember from the choose your own adventure books from when I was a kid in the 80s. I got it to read with my almost-7yo daughter and she found it delightful. We read through about 6 versions before she wanted to move onto other stories, and I am sure she will return.The reading level is probably average for an 9yo or 3rd grader independently, but was good for reading together at age 6.

My 7 year old daughter loved it and wants another one. She read it twice and made some different choices to change the ending and really enjoyed it. Definitly recommend!!

Grandkids [1st and 3rd grade] loved this book!

Fun storyline, finally an adventure for our little girl she can relate too!

My daughter loves this! And she hasn’t found many books that she gets very excited about.

Wow... I thought I was living a pretty healthy life until I read Thrive. I work out regularly and I don’t eat a lot of artificial or packaged foods. But Chayne has shown me how important taking care of both our mental and environmental health is as well, beyond just fitness & dieting which I was more focused on. The biggest takeaway for me is that we need to consider the “indirect health effects” of our consumer choices when trying to improve our health as well, like how our food choices affect our planet which then affect us, or how toxic chemicals from our clothes can pollute our water and then harm us.As a busy person and someone who is relatively new to "sustainable living," this book has been the perfect straightforward, fluff-free guide to help me get started and become more conscious in all aspects of my life. With the way the book is sectioned off topic by topic, I liked how I could easily skip the parts I felt I already knew and dive right into other sections. If you’re thinking about getting this book, my suggestion from reading other reviews would be this: If you’re already an environmental or health expert and are looking for more than a fun/leisurely read, you might be disappointed. But if you want a well-rounded intro to sustainable living, want to take health more seriously and approach it in a more wholesome way, or just want a feel good read, I think you’d find it really valuable like I did.

The book is fairly interesting, but I didn't find any of the insights in it particularly eye-opening--perhaps because I already consider myself an environmentalist and try to apply that to every aspect of my life. My main problem with this book is that it is all for environmental consciousness when buying clothing, body products, etc, but says NOTHING about the environmental impacts of animal agriculture. I don't understand how a book can claim to be a guide to an environmentally conscious lifestyle without so much as mentioning animal agriculture's devastating effects on the environment.

I love this book! Kaméa is such a wealth of knowledge and she puts forth practical steps that every person -- no matter where you are in your wellness / conscious living journey -- can realistically take and implement. What I love most about Kaméa's approach is that everything is connected: the way we treat ourselves reflects the way we impact the earth, the way our decisions affect others, etc. When we take care of ourselves, we take care of the world, and visa versa. I highly recommend this book, whether you are just exploring the idea of conscious living for the first time or have been a wellness warrior for years now. :)

I used The Green Bundle in my Sustainable Business course this fall. Students loved it! It is very readable, and challenges their preconceptions about what drives consumers to buy (or not buy) environmentally conscious products. I had students work in teams to use the Green Bundle concept to evaluate a green product and think critically about what aspects of the green bundle helped consumers decide to adopt that product. This is a gem of a book that really can help us all think more critically about how to get customers actually to buy green products.

Extremely helpful book to consumer norms WRT green goodies. My copy is marketup, dogged eared and read/re-read. It basically reverses the normal consumer marketing maxim: "don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle." With green, you sell the steak first as the best steak you ever tasted--and the sizzle is that it never left a shadow or burped out carbon.Bottom line: consumers inherently think green stuff is lower quality than non-green crappy stuff. Got to get them over that hump first, then pile on personal benefits etc.Also very helpful with positioning an organization to sell green stuff although this is not the focus of the book so much. Thanks for writing this. It buried a lot of normal marketing approaches and raised much better ones.

Delmas and Colgan present an easy to read and engaging book on the elements that are needed to make green products attractive to the consumer. Without a combination of the five, a product is likely to not maximize its sales with the “green” consumer. The book’s analysis is wonderful blend of environmentalism, business and psychology.Each chapter is peppered with examples of the principles in practice, meaning companies that have utilized the techniques they describe. From a consumer perspective I found myself nodding my head when they analyzed why we make certain choices, and how your choice to purchase/not a green product be conflict with our internal environmentalist if not all aspects of the bundle are part of the transaction.

These women who supported the Revolution, who mostly stayed home raising their children and running their homes, took on the additional burden of running their husband's farms and business while their men served in the army or the Continental Congress. Perhaps the most famous of those on the home front was Abigale Adams who was so good at what she did that eventually her husband, John Adams gave her complete decision making so she could collect legal debts, buy land and unofficially have the responsibilities thought to be too burdensome and complex for women to handle. Mercy Otis Warren wrote pamphlets, poems and plays supporting the Revolution, and eventually wrote the first history of that war. Women like these had a complete grasp of the politics of their times though they were not allowed to vote. Many of them like the legendary Mollie Pitcher accompanied their enlisted husbands, stepping in and taking over duties of the fallen. Some disguised themselves as men and fought alongside them. At headquarters, Martha Washington, Kitty Greene and Lucy Knox formed a lasting friendship as they followed their husbands from Boston, Morristown, Vally Forge and finally to victory. The book follows the fortunes of these women as well as many other wives and mothers from all over the thirteen colonies as they managed the homefront and became spectacular at fund raising and other tasks once thought to be beyond their abilities. The book covers the years from the Stamp Act through John Adams' election as President of the new nation of free and equal men. Equality for women is still not complete. Ms Roberts has done a masterly job at researching the lives of the women of the Revolution. Another bonus is her ability to tell an exciting story which is hard to put down.

I'm not yet finished reading this book, but I already like it. There is so much interesting information about the women of the Revolutionary period that you will learn things you never had in history class. And it reads as easy as a novel, with plots that would make many novels seem pale by comparison. But you won't like Benjamin Franklin much after you read his wife's story! He was a great man in many ways, brilliant and creative and an inventor to boot. But he was a selfish and egocentric character as well. I suspect he was much better as a friend than as a husband. His wife, who is usually vaguely brushed off as "common-law", in most histories, was actually a remarkable, strong, intelligent, and accomplished woman. She raised Ben's illegitimate son as well as her own daughter with Ben (their son died tragically young), and ran his businesses while he gallivanted around Europe for years. She deserves better than the very few words accorded her in most histories. I am thankful to Cokie Roberts for telling her story.Of course, Ben's neglected wife is not the only woman in this book. I just had to rant a little about the way she was treated! As I said, I haven't finished the book yet, so I'll be learning about the lives of many more interesting women as I continue with this book.I definitely recommend this book.

Although I knew the wives of our founding fathers were extremely patient and supportive of their husbands' efforts and even assisted on the battlefield (e.g. Martha Washington), I had no idea how many women were actually engaged in battle or how overwhelming their sacrifices were on the home front. These women not only did "women's work", i.e. rearing the children (and mourning the many who did young), managing households, but they were THE wages earners. They ran their "husbands' businesses" while the men were practicing in diplomacy in far-off lands (and enjoying themselves to boot) and ran large, productive estates, in many cases more effectively than their husbands would have done. I don't want to give too many examples of any of this, because it's a book that should be ready by anyone who's interested in the birth our country, and I don't want to spoil it for anyone who might read it. I highly recommend it. I believe it should be required reading in every high school history class; it's a better textbook than many of the ones that are now used. (Is American history still taught now, or was dropped along with geography and cursive writing?)

I like the idea of researching and presenting how women were an important influence on the development of this country historically. Personally, I am not fond of the way the author writes. It is a matter of writing style that was not pleasing to me.
